Hey everyone, I just convinced my brother to get into 40k and the army of his choice was necrons. So far we just bought the battleforce box and haven't built anything.
What models do you think he should purchase next, he's looking to get 2000 points worth over time. Also wondering if he should use the bits in the battleforce box to build
a ghost ark or doomsday ark?

Thanks in advance!

I'd personally build a Ghost Ark, they require less support than a Doomsday Ark.

What sort of list is your friend looking to build? CronAir, AV13 spam, Wraithwing, Scarab Farm? There are loads of different ways to build Necrons, depending on how he wants to build his list will determine what models to advise.

Pretty much every unit is usable in the codex, some are just outclassed by others. The only unit not worth taking are Flayed Ones.

I'm not too familar with necron tactics myself so I'm not sure, although I know he'd like to go slightly competitive against me and my group of friends. I know he visually likes the canoptek wraiths, doom scythes, and the command barge

Fair enough, I've never used Doom Scythes so I can't comment on how good they are, maybe someone else who has experience could comment. Night Scythes are good though, moving Troops 36 inches to contest objectives is awesome. They don't kill their passengers either

Wraiths however are fantastic units. Recommended builds are units of 6, with 2-3 Whip Coils. Make for a 240 point unit with 24 Attacks on the charge, all with Rending. I'd also recommend a Destroyer Lord with them with a Sempiternal Weave and Mind Shackle Scarabs to tank hits for them (2+ armour) and give them Preferred Enemy. Re-rolls to Hit and Wound with WS4 and S6 is pretty nice.

The Catacomb Command Barge is also a fantastic buy, I'd actually suggest that as your brothers next purchase, since it gives your brother a HQ and he can start playing some games. It can also be constructed as an Annihilation Barge, which is one of the best Heavy Support options. General rule for the Overlord in a Command Barge is a Warscythe minimum, upgrades can get quite costly.

Since the Necron Codex is older than others, if your brother hasn't already done so, he's going to want to download the free Necron FAQ from Black Library. It's pretty important, since it gives Warscythes AP1 and allows Night Scythes to disembark their units as well as make them Flyers, among other changes.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. Will probably get the wraiths and command barge first

From the lists I've seen on here, if he likes wraith's and the command barge he will be in good shape.
I thought of doing a neuron army a little while back, decided it wasn't for me. Depending on what points you play, a command barge, a few squads of warriors or immortals in night scythes, wraiths and annihilation barges are what people usually take. Just my 2 cents.

Also, if he isn't thrilled about painting, check out army painter primer in platemail metal or gun metal. Each could cut down the time it takes to knock out an army. Its $10-15 and its great. Just be sure read the instructions or watch the video on the website on how to use it.

I personally would build a Ghost Ark, just for flexibility and ease of use. They're great at doing what they're supposed to do, protect/regenerate your Warriors (or blobs of Warriors) and be an excellent mobility platform. With the bonus of being open topped, they allow your Warriors to do what they need to do without restricting their firepower. In rapid fire range, 30 shots coming at you from the troops inside and the guns on the side is not something to be taken lightly. I've devastated Firewarriors, Crisis Teams, Tactical Squads, etc with a full broadside. Plus, they're quite scary to vehicles too. The only time I've ever had success with a Doomsday Ark is when I've taken two/got really lucky in a friendly game. Splatted 3 Dark Eldar vehicles in one shot (friend thought it was night fighting/didn't pay attention to my list) and essentially took all of his bite in one turn.

The next kit I would recommend is the CCB/Annihilation Barge kit due to the savings. Gives you an Overlord and a two part kit that is easily interchangeable without magnets. One of the best buys out there.
