An interesting article by the BBC about how being blind is less of an obstacle to getting a gun than you might have thought. The people involved are actually very interesting.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Those guys impress me. I'm not convinced by the safety of someone who can't see what they are shooting carrying a gun in public for self defence, but the target shooting and hunting is seriously impressive. The guy with doing the target shooting with his self designed target finder sounds like he has some seriously impressive skills.

More power to them. They've found ways to participate in shooting sports safely, and that's great. I don't have any problem with them having guns, and in many cases it makes sense to have a concealed carry permit simply because it makes transporting firearms in a vehicle much less of a hassle.

I don't think there is any reason why a blind person shouldn't be able to own a gun. If I were to go blind, I wouldn't get rid of any guns I had.

And holy crap, some of that article was ridiculous though. Neither an M16 nor an AR-15 are machine guns. Journalists, for the love of Gork and Mork: Educate yourselves.

I think I posted a similar story quite a while ago here, I'll have to look...

Edit: dang, can't find it. But it was an interesting look at a couple of states and getting/giving permits for blind folks.

Journalists seem to have an impressive track record of not doing their research, especially on gun control matters. I remember this picture floating around a while back. My response was "wow, have I ever been using mine wrong!"

One of the NRA commentators produced a video about blind people owning guns. It was taken down after some backlash

They mention that in the article, actually.

Out of curiosity, what are they classified as? How bout AK-47's? Not insulting, legitimately curious.

An M16 and an AK-47 capable of firing fully automatic are both assault rifles. An AR-15 and a civilian AK-47 are semi-automatic rifles.

Gotcha, thanks! Just for clarification, what exactly makes something a machine gun? Or is that just a meaningless term?

There are different kinds of machine guns (light, medium, heavy, vehicle mounted, etc.). They are belt fed or fed from large magazines, and are capable of sustained, fully automatic fire. A lot of them have the ability to quickly change barrels, but not all. A few examples: A light machine gun would be like a M249 SAW or RPK, a medium machine gun would be like a M240B or PKM, and a heavy machine gun would be something like a .50 cal.

Wikipedia has good articles on all of these if you don't know what they are.

I wondered if the name M16 was confused with or mis-transcribed from M60, which of course is a belt fed 7.62mm general purpose machine-gun.

Judging the the story, that seems pretty unlikely, especially considering they refer to an AR-15 as a machine gun and the civilian version of the M16 McWilliams (one of the blind gun owners) got to handle at a camp as a kid.

Yes, it seems unlikely, though of course if you made the first mistake of putting M16 instead of M60, then the second mistake follows naturally.

I think it is a bit of a shame because a high-capacity belt-fed weapon seems ideal for blind people's use.
