I have an ever growing Space Marine army that I love, but every now and then I just want to paint something different and recently I decided to take the plunge into Malifaux. I've admired many of the models for a while and purchased a fair few Guild miniatures but have started off with Tuco, one of the Neverborn iirc, because he has a cowboy vibe that I dig as a big Deadwood and Justified fan. For some reason the highlighting on the boots hasn't shown up in the photo even though it's there in real life Other than that I'm pretty happy with him.

Looks good, nicely highlighted, especially the coat. Always good to see some Malifaux.

Shot of the base sans vampire:

Harking back to the days when Vampire Counts had distinct bloodlines and the Von Carsteins looked like Bela Lugosi's cousins rather than monsters is this Vampire released for Mordheim. I wanted this model when I was younger and I found it dirt cheap on ebay quite recently without it's halberd (which I never really liked anyway). An appropriate graveyard base and a cruel looking Dark Elf sword are the only additions to a great sculpt. I'm pretty pleased with the results. I might get the hang of blending eventually.

Paradigm - thank you, I'm trying to get the hang of doing more than simple edge highlighting.

I wasn't happy with the dark steel sword on my vamp so I decided to repaint it to represent the 7th ed. magic item Blood Drinker. While I was at it I tried taking some better pictures with slightly different lighting.

Well, here's my latest attempt to expand my painting horizons, an old Dark Elf Dreadlord model. Another of GW now OOP metal fantasy models that I'd always liked and very pleased to get hold of it.

Well executed. I especially like the depth that you've put into the cloak. The highlighting and shading is great. Nice job!

Ok, so after a burst of activity with my Marines over the holidays I felt the need for a palette cleanser of sorts and was painfully aware that my small pile of Malifaux is starting to grow at a far faster rate than I'm painting it. I bought the Torch and the Blade crew set when it came out and I've been trepidatious about tackling such finely detailed miniatures with painting skills that, while ok, are best suited to painting my marines, but we've all got to start somewhere I decided to tackle a Witchling Stalker first of all; it seemed a little less dainty than the humans and the Purifying Flame model.

Here are the results:

I must have ended up using half a bottle of vallejo matte medium in my paints for this guy and brushed on some matte varnish over the robes and still couldn't get rid of some of the gloss finish from the Vallejo Game Colour paints that went into the robes. Contrast that with the Reaper paints I used on the exposed hands and Scale 75 I used for the face mask and I may well be replacing some of my paints with ones from those ranges. Other than the slightly glossy finish I'm pretty happy with him. Tried some more not quite layering and not quite blending on the robes which produced satisfactorily smooth transitions and generally tried to avoid the kind of high contrast edge highlights that my Marines have. I chose the skin to be very pale as not only does it make for a nice contrast but it would make some sense of why the little fellow is so covered up. I didn't mention this in my first post, but my Malifaux basing theme is of an underground desert temple/shrine, inspired by the interiors of the Imhotep's tomb in the film The Mummy (yes the Brendan Fraser one...). Can't decide if I prefer the grey rim for the base or if I should go back and do it brown like with Tuco.

Thanks for looking!

Freytag93 - thank you very much. That's only my 2nd attempt at blending and it took a lot of time and effort to get there, so it's nice to hear that someone else thinks it looks good.

Feindus Maximus - um, thanks? Sorry, not sure what mehn means.

Very nice Witchling, I love those guys (both as models and in game). An unusual scheme for them, but a good one!

Thanks, Paradigm. I think they're cracking litte critters too and I bought the metal ones alongside the Torch and the Blade crew box so I could have six

Glad you like the scheme, I hadn't seen any painted similarly and I wanted to use the olive coloured paints I've had sitting around collecting dust. I'm thinking of giving each one different coloured robes to help keep things interesting and challenging since I'm using my Malifaux stuff to experiment and up my painting game.

The wonderful Dakka Monthly Painting Challenge (find it in the P&M sub-forum and check out other entrants, maybe even take part!) this month settled on Trick or Treat as it's theme, rather aptly, prompting me to dig this fellow out of the unpainted pile:

A slightly better look at his lovely, little face:

Great figure from Hasslefree Miniatures, both fun and frustrating to paint (doing the straitjacket around finished fur gave me conniptions). Hopefully some of you'll like the result.

Another Witchling Stalker:

Since doing the first one I've discovered Reaper's Anti-Shine additive which solved the previous issues with a glossy finish. Changed how I did the swords and bandages this time. Happy with the latter, not so sure about the former.

All looking spiffing. I like the rim colour on the last witchling the best.

3rd Witchling Stalker is done:

There's a couple of things I wish I'd done a bit better, but I was trying to finish it for the Dakka Monthly Painting Challenge, whose deadline was midnight yesterday, having been laid low by flu for the last several days. I'm pretty satisfied overall.

Here they are all together.

Hadnt realised until taking that photo that I'd done the most recent one so much darker than the one on the left. Clearly they're both very different to my first attempt, hooray for Reaper Anti-Shine Additive.

Tyrannosaurus - thank you. Yes, me too. As you can see I've gone and added the same colour to all of them now

Time for something different:

A Republican Commando Assault Specialiast form Anvil Industry's Afterlife range.

bocatt - thank you very much, the Witchlings are some of my favourite Malifaux models, so I'm proud to have done them some kind of justice.

Guildenstern - such nice words, much appreciated.

kestral - they really are, aren't they? I think Malifaux's plastics are possibly the best around.

Latest piece is a Guild Austringer. He was 'finished' at the end of August, but I spotted a couple of things after taking photos that I wanted to fix, I think that's done now.

I tried to go super smooth on him and I think it's worked best on the overcoat. it didn't photograph well, but his shirt is actually a realy dark green. Pretty pleased wth the falcon as it's a fiddly thing that perpetually felt it was on the point of snapping off his arm at the slightest application of pressure with my brush (teeny, tiny, flimsy legs as a connection point are not a good idea Wyrd!) and I've never tried painting a 'real' animal before.

Been over a year since I finished any Malifaux coming back in with the Purifying Flame from Torch & The Blade:

Wanted the fire to be a little different and thought a charred black skeleton would be an interesting contrast at the centre of all the eldritch purple. Does it work?

Brutal Effigy for my Malifaux crew:

Reasonably pleased with the woodgrain effect on the coffin as it's my first time trying to create that on what's basically a blank, flat surface.

I've been meaning to do an atypical Mordheim Undead warband for a while with skeletons instead of zombies and wraiths instead of ghouls. Here's the first couple of skellies:

Took it as an opportunity to try different bone techniques. Quite like both and enjoyed figuring them out, so I may do each further skeleton differently. Together shot for contrast:

First time I've really messed around with rust and patina on models too, reasonably happy with how that went.

Thanks a lot, there are a bunch of half finished undead things on my desk at the moment, they may be forthcoming relatively soon.

that scarecrow is great. your blending is sublime. buttery smooth.
i would have done the metal as rusty as possible but that's just me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
also the orange of the rust would, with the pumpkins, bookend the figure nicely.

Thanks, bubber. I had been thinking of doing some rust, but this was a v ery last minute completion for the P&M monthly challenge and I didn't want to risk ruining his pitchfork with a technique I don't use very often, have to fix it and then miss the deadline.

Wood Elf Archer:

I know the part of the cloak furthest to the left in the rear view may look unfinished, but it's the darker colour because it's actually part of the cloak lining which has billowed out and around the model. It's maybe a little difficult to see that.

This one has a bit of a story. A few years ago I bought it intending to paint it up for a then girlfriend as her RPG character. Before that could happen we had a less than pleasant break up and it had sat primed on my desk ever since. Occasionally I'd spot it alongside all the other pending models and think 'Ok, I'm just going to get this thing done and that will be that'. Never happened, couldn't bring myself to spend time on it. FInally painting it was actually a fairly carthartic process, I didn't know how much ill will and general bad feeling about that relationship I still harboured until it started to release as I painted. I've made sure the model resembles the ex (very fair skin, auburn hair, obvious eyeliner) as closely as possible and maybe that was part of it. Anyway, I know people don't generally come to the showcase thread for that kind of confessional, but I felt compelled to write this, so, if any of you strangers on the internet gave the words some of your time, thank you.
