Black Templar Recruit Undergoing Surgeries
|
In love with my power armors I was going to keep growing my Chaos guys' army, but then I found the fluff of the Lamenters, which made me want to scream some things as "FOR THE EMPEROR".
I hereby request the help of the long-lurked DakkaDakka to go penitent and find the Emperor's light by making an SM army
The thing is, I never liked the majors chapters such as DA, Ultras, Templars, etc.. I tried the wikis, looked around forge world, without success. So here it is: do you have in mind some other chapters with a special background, or at least a clue to where I can look?
Thanks for reading me.
-With a bolt,
Joseph

Wikia has a great 40k section.
Lesser known chapters: Star Phantoms, Knights of Blood, Exorcists, Invaders...there are hundreds.
There a specific sort of chapter quality you're looking for?

Thanks for replying.
I tried different wikis, but I sort of got lost in the lists.
As for the chapter, I would like one far different from the usual marines, in order to have fun converting them and giving my minis a special look, possibly a chapter not dealing with chaos. Especially I have a thing for Apothecaries.

The one that I always liked and would be interested in collecting/painting a small force of is the Iron Knights. But I'm an Imperial Fists/Black Templars fanboi so am biased towards any crusader/Feast of Blades chapter.
Nothing really super special or different about them, other than being one of twelve Feast of Blades participants and therefore being noteworthy in the fluff as above average melee fighters. I think they've got a cool name and look cool, though (gunmental power armour and hereldic shield on their shoulders), which is always a top priority when I consider which miniatures/armies I like.
It depends what you're drawn to aesthetically and fluff-wise at the end of the day. Seeing as you want something different/special when compared to vanilla chapters maybe look into renegade chapters? I.e. not chaos, not codex, fighting for their own cause or for the Emperor but in their own extreme and/or misunderstood way?

My favourite lesser known Chapters are
Black Dragons - They have bone protrusions they use to kill people. Awesome unique looking conversions possible.
Sons of Medusa. They are essentially Iron Hand extremists who believe in the Machine God. They have close ties with the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Lamenters - Sided with Huron in the Badab War, were accepted back into the fold, then got hit by Hive Fleet Kraken. Oh, did I mention they're not allowed to recruit new Neophytes?
Red Scorpions- SMs who wear grey Power Armour and are obsessed with their geneseed purity. They also refused to serve along ogryns, squats etc etc.
Minotaurs - They deal with SM rebellions in the most brutal manner possible. And they love it.
Celestial Lions - Stood up to the Inquisition who then tried wiping them out on Armageddon (and almost succeeded). They're now better friends with the Black Templars than the Necrons are with the Blood Angels.
Carchorodons - Secretive SMs who are completely flying rodent gak. Aka Space Sharks.
Excorcists - Grey Knights successor Chapter.
Carchorodons and Red Scorpions have FW miniatures too!
Hope this is helpful!

Minotaurs, Carcharadons and the Celestial Lions are pretty cool. I'd go with one of them personally.

Edited for errors
I'd recommend the Iron Snakes (greeks that use spears), Mortifactors (Ultrasmurf successors that drink blood and are obsessed with death), Carcharadons (brutal melee chapter), Storm Wardens (celtic SM chapter), Death Spectres (pale white almost translucent skin, makes them creepy) or Red Hunters (strong ties to the Inquisition).
Or create your own DIY chapter, head over to Bolter&Chainsword and look around under Liber Astartes (if I remember right). They usually have quite a few home made chapters. I've created the Angels Requiem, Storm Drakes, Head Takers, Crimson Gargoyles and the Ghosts of War among others. Sometimes it's better to just make your own and if you want apothecaries have your chapter be a BA successor.

Couple mistakes there. The Storm Wardens are the Celtic themed chapter, not the Storm Lords. The Exorcists are the ones with inquisition ties, not the Executioners (though honestly the Red Hunters have a way better relationship than that).

The Eagle Warriors have a challenging, but nice paint scheme if you can do white and halving.
Mortifactors look cool and have some cool fluff.
If you like tanks, the Aurora Chapter has a slick green scheme.
And these guys look awesome.

Here is my favourite minor Space Marine Chapter.
Mantis Warriors - http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Mantis_Warriors#.U_Fuo_mSwb8
Went rogue because they were sworn to help the Astral Claws (who they didn't know had fallen to chaos). This led to the Badab war and they were almost destroyed but allowed to go on a Penitent Crusade. They survived and are back in the Imperium but are still pretty much outcasts. They're the only Space Marines I know of to actually use a Camo scheme for the environment they're in.
Their Main Scheme:

I'd make your own that way you're free to do whatever you want. I like the flesh tearers, blood angels successors who used to rampage and just do alot of collateral damage, till chapter master Gabriel Seth came in and said "holy feth! Guys stop killing our homies!" So now they usually attack first away from friendlies and are usually gone before they arrive. Gabriel has a cool mini also. Though I'd say make your own, you could then decide their look and play style.

Oops! Appreciate that, I knew I had read about a chapter with ties to the Inquisition (other then the GK and Exorcists) and I thought it was the Executioners but got it mixed up.
That being said the Executioners are a cool chapter in their own right with a decent amount of fluff in their own right so to the OP I also recommend them.

I'd even suggest Carcharodons might be Loyalist Night Lords, judging from the wiki.

But yeah, if you like Apothecaries go for Red Scorpions.

RS get apothecary sergeant s for their tac squads. And best of all have Magistir Sevrin Loth as probably the best psyker avaliable for loyalist SMs. Chap master Cullen is pretty sorted too. His smash attack still grants him half his attacks rather than just 1 (it is described as a special smash attack in his rules, and codex overwrites rulebook). Automatically Appended Next Post: Also a chapter that will look different to all other chapters are Mantis Warriors as they use camouflage. Automatically Appended Next Post: My bad - Chaz also mentioned them.

Thanks a lot for all your answers.
For those who told me "Make your own!", this is the idea: starting with a very specific chapter I aim to build my own story of a few marines, using their original background to guide me for their motivations, ways to think/fight... Something like a few guys separated from the rest of the chapter, trapped in a space hulk or such.
I read all your ideas, and I have been very tempted by the Red Scorpions until I read about the Flesh Tearers. Busy sanguinary priests aka apothecaries in a black tower, almost extinct chapter, librarians looking for lost books and violent marines, I volonteer (And my pseudo goes pretty well with this chapter... ) .
So thanks a lot, dear dakkanauts. I can now redeem myself in the eyes of the Emperor of Mankind while tearing through Xenos.

I second Lamenters, they are the real heroes of 40k, and if you can get them right you'll have an awesome yet rare army that most people will recognize.
Or make your own chapter, that way they can feel personal and there's little or no restriction on what you do with them (also gives you a way of playing multiple armies- DA, BA, SM, CSM, maybe even SW at a push).
