He did jump bail in UK, that's one crime we can prove without a shadow of a doubt.
And this warrant is Swedish, not american, they ewant to talk to him over this and the more he hides from it the more guilty he is looking in one sense.
Since when have Americans a even harder time to extradite from Sweden over UK and he could if he can get agreement have Swedish police come to him or via video link etc.
Sort the charges out.

If Assange is convicted and jailed in Sweden, then I expect the chances of a subsequent extradition to the USA will increase dramatically.
Unless of course Sweden shows that it's commitment to Human Rights is absolute and genuine and refuse to ship him off to Guantanamo Bay. (Speaking of which, when will Obama get round to closing it like he promised?)

At first I didn't see Sweden as a place where people get extrtadited from, but Sweden now has a 'progrssive' government, and they are very easy to bully.
I have a lot of sympathy for Assangem, he is an australian citizen, not as Us citizen and has no moral obligation to keep US secrets especially if they are handed to him outside the US.
The US cant get an international arrest warrant on hiom, but they can bully certain countries.
Frankly he would be better off in France, the French are very good at being bloody minded over extradition, and they stand up to the US in ways that makes me somewhat ashamed; or in his native Oz.

Because people like to make stuff up to fit their own version of the world, especially when it comes to Assange. He seems to have some sort of reality distortion field around him. Somehow people think he could be taken to Guantanamo, under an international arrest warrent, and that Sweden are more likely than the UK to extradite him. Surely if the US were that desperate to get hold of him they could have done something when the UK government had him. I can't believe all these people who are dismissing these women and the possibility that perhaps the Swedish police do just want to interview him, and that he as a suspect does not have the right to negotiate special terms, especially as he has already shown that he is a huge flight risk if charged.

Because that's what the US government labelled him (and Edward Snowdon)?
I recall various American talk show hosts, reporters, "expert" talking head guests etc rather hilariously calling Assange a traitor. (Fox News probably).

The Swedes do not "just want to interview him". Other posters here have said that they've charged him.

: a person who is not loyal to his or her own country, friends, etc. : a person who betrays a country or group of people by helping or supporting an enemy
There is a reason behind it because they are using one of the definition's of traitor.

I must admit I am a little confused about exactly what they want, as there are so many conflicting statements. Either way it is no excuse for him to avoid a legal extradition warent.

Well they could have struck a deal and gave him a guarantee they'll not extradite him to the USA. They refused and demanded he b handed over unconditionally.

He actually did none of these things. Wikileaks hasn't exposed much in its history so much as publish the US government's diary* (Historians I know have praised Wikileaks not for revealing information but proving things they already knew to be correct). Of the mountains of documents and hundreds of millions of words Wikileaks has published, almost none of it has been new information on anything. I assume you even missed the part where John Young quit Wikileaks on the grounds that they'd become a source of CIA disinformation.
Ironically, the things they expose, tend to have nothing to do with world affairs. The leak of Alpha Sigma Tau's sorority rituals was quite shocking
*To expand, for example people already knew about the July 12, 2007 Baghdad airstrike incident and the military was in the process of investigating it years before Wikileaks leaked the video of the incident.
The most revealing thing Wikileaks ever released were the US diplomatic cables, which was more embarrassing for the US than it was a revelation of anything terrible or wrong.

There is a reason behind it because they are using one of the definition's of traitor.
You can't betray a country that you never had any loyalty in the first place. Assange is not a US citizen, he does not owe any loyalty to the US. Accusing him of betraying the US makes about as much sense as accusing the US of betraying terrorism every time they drone someone to death. Automatically Appended Next Post: Steve steveson wrote:Somehow people think he could be taken to Guantanamo, under an international arrest warrent, and that Sweden are more likely than the UK to extradite him.
The argument that this is absurd would be a lot more convincing if the US didn't have a history of ignoring any inconvenient laws as long as it involves Bad People who have no rights because they are Bad.
I can't believe all these people who are dismissing these women and the possibility that perhaps the Swedish police do just want to interview him, and that he as a suspect does not have the right to negotiate special terms, especially as he has already shown that he is a huge flight risk if charged.
It's easy to dismiss that possibility because there is a clear trend of similar rape accusations being ignored. This is an extremely unusual level of effort to bring in a rape suspect, especially one that doesn't involve a "stranger jumps out of the bushes" situation. If Assange was just some random guy at an average college party the accusations would be dismissed with a few comments about "he said, she said" or speculation about how she really "wanted it" and just changed her mind later.

Uh, no. Australia doesn't stand up to the US or well, anyone else really. The ineffectual nature of our embassies and willingness to give up Australian citizens to maintain goodwill is kind of famous. In fact, it's often said among Australian travelers that if you get in the gak in a foreign country you're better off if there is no Australian embassy, because then under the Commonwealth obligation defaults to the British embassy, and those guys are much more likely to do something for you.
Point being, there are very good reasons that Assange will not be returning to Australia. Australia is probably the country most likely to extradite him to the US.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Agreed, Australia is pathetic when it comes to protecting it's citizens from extradition to the US. Apparently Sweden has some clause in it's legal system which will mean he can be extradited straight away on arrival in Sweden. I cannot prove this, i saw some tv program on it two years ago (which may or may not have been pro-assange)

If I were Assange I would legitimately kill myself. There's no way out. Sooner or later he'll have a heart attack, there will be a fire, Ecuador will get sick of him, or something will force him out of the embassy, and then he's off to the Never Never Land of Extradition and US "Pound Me In the Ass" Federal Prison.
