Evening all,
Currently starting to paint my Imperial Knight the hawkshroud colours and I'm having difficulty with the yellow. I've had to do layers of yellow to drown out the black undercoat. Is there a way to combat the black?

Avoid priming with black if there will be large areas of yellow and use multiple thin coats of paint.

Use a good intermediate brown over the black first.

Always use white , where your gonna paint yellow mate as you'll never cover black with yellow as yellow is very opaque will take to many layers and the yellow will never look smooth if you wanna then shade the yellow using sepia wash thinned out ...! if you check my imperial captain out in my gallery that's how i did it !

Id suggest building up layers if you must have a black primer. Start with a medium brown, then a bone colour, then your yellow. Use a wash to fill out the colour, then layer with yellow

Don't prime black if you want bright, light colours like yellow.

If you've already primed it black, block out the areas you want to paint yellow with a couple of coats of white first. Then go for the yellow with a large, hardy brush.

Well, there's a slight risk of gluing something together with it. Only slight, mind.

I'd agree on the idea of either priming white, or applying white to the areas prior to doing the yellow just to give a more vibrant colour. You can also use an airbrush to "shade" the lower areas with a brown/dark red first to give some shadow to your yellow without knocking the vibrancy of the top colour.
As an example:

when I undercoated the Knight I hadn't decided to go yellow. I was thinking just going the House colours on the box (can't remember the house) but changed my mind because it reminded me of the smurfs.
