This isn't a showcase or anything, but I need some help, guys

For my army, I really really want the Chaplain with the jump-pack model, but I'm afraid that the bloody thing is going to immediately snap off the base as soon as I pick it up and nudge it!

Look at this! All of my models so far have two feet, firmly planted into the base. Not one toe!

So tell me Dakka, is this model going to break as soon as I nudge it, or did GW do the smart thing and make the leg or something part of the base?

Blessed be the Emperor, Blessed be us!

The foot is connected to the rock, but it is still a flimsy connection that is prone to breaking (this wasn't as big a deal when the model was metal, before switching to Finecast).

You have a few options on what to do:
-Be careful with the model and hope doesn't snap off
-Proactively address the issue by reinforcing the joint by making a clean cut, pinning it, and then tidying up the area with green stuff or Milliput
-Search on eBay for a secondhand metal version (this might even be cheaper than buying the Finecast one from GW)

Surely the connection cant be that flimsy? I handle all of my models with care

While not quite as helpful if you like that specific model, you can just slap a jump pack onto a normal foot chaplain.

Finecast is pretty brittle, more so if there is a casting defect in that area (a distinct possibility). I've broken that same miniature and I've never gamed with it; I snapped it off while cleaning it.

The metal version can be found on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/331293742245 (unpainted)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291216614831 (painted, but since it's metal it can be easily stripped)

I own the metal sculpt and it's great! If you're worried about breakage, I would buy a metal model and skip the resin models.

I'm buying the Metal model, it's decided. Is there anything special I need to use for Metal or can I keep using my up-to-date citadel paints and glue?

If the metal isn't an option, get a long, thin drill bit and run a pin along the length of the leg from the bottom of the base up. You'll need a good eye for lines though.

This article covers how to prepare a metal model: http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/11/tutorial-how-to-prepare-metal-miniature.html?m=0

Now, not everything in that article will apply to this particular model. You should need to fill any gaps as it is only four pieces: two arms, body, jump pack. Make sure you use super glue (and not the GW super glue). Personally, I prefer to pin my metal models because super glue isn't always enough to prevent pieces from coming off if the model is dropped.

Forgive me for being dumb but what is pinning? The article doesn't explain it very well.

Use a drill bit the same size as a paperclip

Drill a hole in both sides of the join

Glue short length of the clip into the holes when glueing the parts together, so a single bit of wire fits in both holes.

This will reinforce the joint significantly. It was almost required on older metal kits. With plastic and resin being so light, it’s optional these days on most things.

For all of the flaws of Finecast, it is resin, and it's really easy to drill and pin small resin pieces. If you DO get the Finecast one, a careful drilling and pinning job should protect it really well. Since this resin is so light, it doesn't have much weight, so even a relatively thin pin (not a chunky paper clip, but one of the finer wire ones) will hold it pretty good.

Getting the bit lined up just right might be the biggest headache.

The metal one is great, but it's very top heavy. The resin one would be less likely to topple over, but you could fix that by weighing down the base itself.
