So not too long ago I was given an old Tau Army box. Okay it was missing the kroot but it had a metal AunVa and 6 FW heavy drones, three of which were the marker version.

So what do people think of the heavy markers? Are they a viable choice?

What book are the rules in?

IA3. Almost twice the cost of a normal drone, but comes equipped with a burst cannon and a markerlight. Only prob is that they are a heavy choice.

Being BS2, they're not going to be very good at actually hitting things with Markerlights.

The general consensus is that Heavy Drones from FW are not very good, that the twin-linked Burst Cannon option is slightly better than the Burst Cannon + Markerlight (since you can only fire one or the other and with low BS) and they take up a valuable Heavy Support slot.

That said, I personally love the various drone models, so I enjoy trying to make them work.

Drones dont have the firing two weapons option and i believe heavy drones dont either, so theres literally no point in having both lol. Giving it a TL burst allows it to kill things but skip under the radar since its just a burst cannon, however ANYTHING that has a markerlight draws fire like crazy.

You wouldnt ever use the burst except in overwatch, as the ML would be needed more often than not.

They are great models, and horrible units.
Same applies to pretty much all forgeworld tau except ralai, rmyr, tetra, barracuda and remora, who are all pretty decent.

I see, all pertinent points, but I can't help but think on the Drone Controller. I have seen many posts on the subject of adding a cheap HQ with a drone controller to the unit, thereby circumventing the low BS. And while the primary use is for the MLs, I can see situational use for the BC. But then again they are relentless and so can use the ML even if moving.

Having been given them I just want to try and figure out the best use for them.

Unfortunately, the text for Drone Controller reads "All Gun Drones, Marker Drones, and Sniper Drones in the same unit..." Most people interpret this to mean that it doesn't affect Heavy Gun Drones or Heavy Marker Drones (not to mention Missile Drones or Shielded Missile Drones).
