Thousand Sons have no range. The closer you get to them the deadlier they get.
Engage them at 36"-48" inch range with heavy bolters, missile launchers, lascannons, etc

A buddy of mine ran a big 1k sons list against me, two flying demon princes were what worried me cause ap3 bolters dont work for **** against land raiders, rhinos, and razorbacks. So everyone stayed bunkered up til i got close enough to pop out and fire.

Clicked thread expecting it to be a joke. Turns out op really is losing to a 1k Sons army. Why cant my meta have players like this.. You cant play CSM around here, its autolose.

For what it's worth, thousand sons got a pretty big boost with 7th. The new psychic phase basically doubled every squad's firepower. Combined with relentless bolters, they can pop off a shooting power, rapid fire, then assault.
Things like grav weapons, plasma cannons, and big terminator squads in land raiders are actually pretty terrible against thousand sons. Small numbers of low ap weapons are the scissor to their 4++ rock, especially when you're spending as much on your squads as he is.
Just take normal cheap tac squads, stick them in normal cheap rhinos, and shoot his magical expensive ghost robots with normal cheap bolters. Against thousand sons you can outnumber him in models 2 to 1, especially if he's bringing possessed too. Save the grav/plasma/termie shenanigans for the nurgle bikers.

How many Thousand Suns can a person kill if they are off the board? how many turns are in the game and of them, how msny turns do they need to be on the objective to score them?

Why not proxy your lotd mm for heavy flamer and deep strike them next to his 1000 sons, pop em on the turn they come in. Just keep your distance from everything the whole game. Possessed and spawn are not a big threat, until they get close. Bikes are a problem, but you have devastators with lass cannons, so add 5 marines and then combat squad them so you can fire at the same or different targets based on need, but I'd focus his smallest unit for first blood.

Christ....at one point this thread fell off the first page of tactics forum, so I thought it was end of discussion, popped back on here today to see it has 30+ posts.....
Though I am slightly dissapointed to see that a large majority of these posts are pretty much along the lines of "git gud" to a new player that has been playing for less than 3 months. Keep in mind that out of my group we also have a gk player, and a tau player, and he has yet to lose, so it's clearly not just my sucky playing (though don't get me wrong, I've no doubt that that is part of the problem).
So yes, I know more armor would fix the problem with his 1ksons, but that involves money that I just don't have right now, so I'm trying to make due with that I have.
As for tactics, correct me if I'm wrong, and I did make sure to ask him the other day about this as well, but his 1ksons have a 24" range like my crusader squads, with the exception of the lascannons I have (because I have two five man crusader squads running with las/plas.) So lets say I move within range, and pop some shots off, kill 2 in his squad of 5 1ksons. The guy has min/maxed for warp charges, so what usually happens is that when his turn comes around, he uses shriek and kills a good portion of a squad there, and then his 1ksons champions use warp fire (I think is the power), and may or may night kill a guy or two there. then shooting phase comes and he opens up with that ap3, so I'm only getting cover saves, on the 2 or three guys left in the squad. say I fail 1 or two of those saves, and I'm left with pretty much no squad left. and then the process repeates it's self with his other 5 man 1ksons squad. All the while those possessed and bikers advance.
And now the guy has a hellbrute and prince with wings....yay! Though I haven't fought them yet, so I cant say how bad they are.

Tzeenchian powers are not that strong. Actually, the weakest chart avaliable for psychers. And his 1k son's lvl1 sorcerrors can only roll on this table. It's almost as likely that they die from perils rather than kill something with that stuff making them basically 50 pt sergeats with force weapons. The problems might be caused by his sorc, but he's a 2-wound guy that can be killed quite easilly too.
Csm have quite mediocre ranged capabilities - especially 1k sons.

As people have said before, it's all in the strategy (and a little luck of course!)
Speaking for the Chaos side, I can say that your best friend against the Rubricae is going to be things that force them to take their Invuln Save and denying them the ability to shoot.
As Black Templars, you obviously want to get in and smash some faces, but in 7th Ed you play a much more difficult and dangerous game by banking on Assault. Shooting is king, as you have seen, but there are ways to thread the needle. Taking Plasma Guns or Melta Guns will help soften them up before piling in, and making careful use of cover/LOS will save your life. Afterall, AP3 Boltguns and Witchfires will only work when they can actually hit you!
If you're playing on tables with very little terrain, such that the map is a giant open field with a few boulders or a couple of buildings for cover, you should really consider adding more stuff onto the board, especially walls or windowed buildings. It makes the game a lot more dynamic. If you already have such a set-up, then abuse walls and cover; do not let him see you to Psychic Shriek you or Firestorm/Doombolt/Flame Breath you.
Also, since it sounds like this guy is moving forward and shooting, try to flank him on either side; he can't shoot anything, and if your assault units are kitted out landing them in will cause severe damage. The Possessed and Aspiring Sorcerers/Ahriman are the threats to deal with up close, so figure out what you can take to make them that much less powerful (AP3, anyone?).

If you can afford some new stuff, a predator loaded up with heavy bolters and autocannons would do a lot of damage to his infantry while not being in danger from them in return. I'd also run a squad or two of devastators with autocannons/heavy bolters if that's an option. I don't think it's worth it to throw low ap stuff at thousand sons because you only take their armor save from 3+ to 4+. Rhinos would also negate his troops ability to damage your guys, so if you pop a couple special weapons in the squad you could just drive around them and whittle them down.
If you can't get any new models, then tactic wise I'd just advise making sure your tactical squads are sitting in some ruins or rubble for the 4+ cover. You can get 20 tacticals for the cost of his 10 sons. If you're exchanging fire from 4+ cover positions then you'll win the fight with superior numbers.
