starting a new batch today

this is all preshading and undertones to give the colours more depth and texture. The airbrush will be used next to give a final smooth finish to certain areas before the actual painting begins. Then ill go back in and shade everything back down again before highlighting all of the things.

'eres a wip of some jacks, showing the coloured underlayer, textures and preshading/highlights before all the actual colours get glazed in, I tend to class all this stuff as preparation before painting

it just happened naturally over the years, adding things as i go

i remember when the bloat thrall was released all those years ago and i vaguely remember thinking "that is awesome, i will paint one of those one day", but i was completely wrong, i ended up painting 3

Those are excellent and more importantly different looking figs!

Can't wait to see more of those corroded looking undead.

I'm a big fan of the basing on these guys too, simple but impressively churned mud / coastal / undersea. Did you make them by just filling the PP base in with putty and mashing it around with ... something? Then paint a creamish color and flood with wash(es)? I tried to recreate them recently, and I think I used too gentle of a tool and not enough wash.

Yeah I believe that is the general process. The client makes the bases and I just handle the painting side of things. You want enough of a trough between the waves to pool a decent amount of liquid. Ill be doing a tute in the not so distant future on painting bases, but basically I just do a zenithal undercoat on the base at a 90 degree angle, ie. horizontal with the base so the white just clips the top of the waves and makes 1 side of the base lighter than the other. You can be really messy with this undercoat, i use spraypaint rather than my airbrush because it gives a better texture for mud. Then you should have something somewhat resembling a yinyang symbol which can be hit with layers of washes, usually 2-3 is best. I tend to wetblend these washes aswell to get a more interesting transition between a warm and cool colour
