As it says on the tin, I'm curious to see what's missed most and why, from as far back as you can remember (40k related!) be that units, tactics, rules, fluff, whatever.

General assault balancing: charging from a stationary transport, reserves, outflank, etc. That's my primary beef with the current ruleset.

What he said

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

I was hoping for more of a nostalgic answer lol. We all know assault sucks right now, what about a particular character or something?

The Doom of Malan'tai. He was just fun to use seeing how people reacted to his presence.

On moon miranda.

The 5E vehicle mechanics (aside from vehicle shooting rules), 4E Victory Points over Kill Points, Hydras that were worth something, having Medusas and Griffons in the basic codex :p

I also miss Legion rules. The mechanics were often flawed, but the idea is alive and present and largely well constructed in the SM codex...no clue why CSM's can't have it again.

EDIT: also, I prefer the art of the older books. It had a lot more...atmosphere. The newer art, while from a technical standpoint is fantastic, doesn't quite nail the universe for me. I prefer the older stuff that looked like it came out of some sort of heavy metal album cover.

Likewise, the newer the fluff is, the worse it seems to be.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

It was a dumb, negligibly costed and borderline broken (mostly because of the terrible rules writing that by some mistake meant it always got to fire the ability twice before you could do anything to it), auto-take silly unit that effectively worked as a one turn anti-infantry nuke coming in from deepstrike that at its worst with bad luck would kill a fair portion of each unit near where it deep-struck with no real defences against it.

As someone that before the new Nid Codex never played a Tyranid player without that unit, I can't say I've missed it.

Tyranids in general. So that includes the assault phase, modifying the stat line with biomorphs (Enhanced senses improving Ballistic Skill, Extended Carapace improves Armor Save), Ymgarl Stealers, overall variation between Tyranid lists instead of the mono-builds nowadays. Being on of the very very few units able to actually Run. Sad when an Eldar can outpace a bunch if scurrying bugs AND still shoot. I missed the entire Doom of Malan'tai but it does sound fun.

The Doom was entirely broken and undercosted, that being said it suffered the same weakness as a normal Zoan. 1 Str8 shot and failed invul and it was dead, no matter how many wounds he had racked up.

He was a unique Tyranid character that, due to very shoddy writing of his rules, had the ability to basically generate a huge-ass "death bubble" around itself that would pretty much wipe a large section of the board clean of dismounted models.

I miss the subject to hatred rules that the various Chaos Armies used to have, and the way that each of them had their own unique flavor. I miss the massive table of Chaos Gifts.

I miss Codex: Witchhunters and Codex: Daemonhunters, where the relatively-small parts of the Imperium could make an appearance on the table-top, surrounded by the forces that they would normally be expected to deploy with.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

As for what I miss, probably Al'Rahem from the Imperial Guard Book most of all. An extremely fun unit to use that was, now outflanking Guardsmen is a royal pain in the ass without importing allied characters. For anyone that played fluffy light infantry or Tallarns it more or less rid your army of a greatly distinguishing gameplay feature.

I miss when people played armies against each other, you know, instead of collections...

I also miss when 40k was a game and not a "shared experience".

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Squats. Shooting modifiers instead of cover saves. Flamers setting models on fire and having them run around randomly. Sisters that weren't D&D Clerics. Space Wolves that weren't awful. Orks that could shoot. Two Rhinos for $20 (or even one for $15 was okay). Space Marines that hadn't been nerfed to augment their sales figures.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

That is until 6th Edition and Iron Arm came about.

I miss something less mechanical than most: the "reasons why this army would fight X army" like what was in the back of Codex: Witchhunters. It just added flavor to the fight and gave you some insight into an army's motivations and philosophies.

I really like the current core rules. I don't miss anything in this regard.

I'm also incredibly happy with the current Space Marine codex (my army of choice). If it never got updated I don't think I'd mind.

I suppose, if I really think about it, I kind of miss the 2nd Ed. Ultramarines chapter standard barrier character (Galatan). He didn't have a whole lot of 'fluff' behind him, but there is a piece of art portraying him that is SOoo amazing there could be a novel written about it.

4th Edition LOS rules.

Eldar web of skulls was cool. Linking fire prism shots too.

Not being able to target independent characters with shooting most of the time. I wonder of dumping that rule is part of why death stars happened since if they can be targeted easily they need more toys to stay alive, then boom death stars.

Daemonhunters, when I was younger I bought their codex and was going to start a army, but decided to wait for plastic grey knights to come out.

And well, while I like the GKS well enough, I liked them more when they were mysterious bad-assess then cringe worthy mary sues.
