Fine Molds 1/72 scale model; completed in Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics, 502 Abteilung oils, and Secret Weapon Miniatures pigments. No decals used for the markings or colored panels.
I'm not that happy with how it turned out. I don't like the base color, the pigments are not how I want them, and the decals still piss me off. Personally, I think the photos look better than the model (for once). I still have three more of these guys to build so I definitely learned a lot moving forward. You can read more about the build on my website or Dakka blog. It was good to knock this out since a Stormraven and a Knight-Titan just showed up on my doorstep today from a client. With the X-wing behind me, I can focus 100% on this commission.
Comments and criticism always welcome!

It almost looks like the pigments are too thick. Have you tried doing a pigment wash? Mix the SWM pigments with Isopropyl Alcohol and use it just like an acrylic wash. great for streaking and blending from light to heavy pigment saturation (for exhaust burns and stuff).
Either way good stuff on a good model.

Thanks man.
The pigments in the droid strip behind the cockpit are intentionally thick; I tried to reproduce the studio model which is heavily weathered (too much if you ask me, but considering the lack of HD cameras in 1976 it wasn't that big of a deal because you couldn't tell on screen). But yeah, I agree that is still probably too thick and a pigment wash probably would have been a good idea. I thought about it and decided against it, which now in retrospect I wish I hadn't.
Either way, like the idiom goes, "You are your own worst critic."

I agree the studio model is way too weathered for my tastes. Either way its a great looking model.

**I** think you did it all perfect except one thing: base color not grey enough.
I saw a build review and the person commented on the ton of decals being a pain as well.
See links of other models:

All your careful color details are competing a bit with the brightness of the model.
Maybe some slight panel shade variations on the cowling? (You did this on other models so maybe pictures do not show this well?)
Guns and "intakes" (reverse thrusters I think) cowlings are a little too clean?
Having seen your Darth Vader Tie Fighter I am sure when you do the next X-wing it will be better than the models in the links I posted.
Way back when the first X-wing model kit came out: it was the worst model I had EVER put together (poorly made, warped, blob pilot.. yeck!).
Looking at your model, I think I want to try this again.
I am a fan of your work.

I used high resolution photos of the filming models (not the Special Edition CG models like that second picture) to build this kit. As far as the color goes, I deliberately warmed the light grey base color with brown filters; this was a conscience decision on my part as I was not trying to reproduce the filming miniature (which looks pretty bad in all reality). I did this to contrast the cool colors I painted my Imperial models with.
The brightness of the pictures has a lot to do with the image processing. There is a lot of subtle variations in the various panels and after looking at these photos again, the colors aren't where they are supposed to be and I'll reedit them.

Ah! figured there was more detail there than could be seen.
Your other projects are pretty consistent so I had a suspicion.
Looking forward to the re-post!

They're meant to be these mashed up, old, reconstructed starships, they're never out of combat, always getting hit and nicked, they're meant to be weathered. Also, since when are interstellar spaceships clean?
