When I bring the Ironclad, it is in a first turn drop pod. The way I currently equip mine is with the fist and seismic hammer, a meltagun and heavy flamer (or 2 HF in the event of Orks), and 1-2 hunter-killer missiles. I always assume that the Assault Launchers are useless in practice. I just wanted to find out if there is a better way to equip him to maximize his utility and minimize his cost. I also play against only Eldar, Orks, and AM (with DA allies).

Not that I can think of. The combo of Heavy Flamer and Multi Melta give you options. The double heavy flamer can help against the hordes. I never really ran mine with the hunter/killer missiles, seeing as how he was usually dead pretty quickly after arrival. But, i haven't played SM since 5th.

HK missles aren't bad on drop ironclads because they always get to shoot them at what they want and from whichever side they want, but myself and many others feel they are overcosted.

If they were 5 points apiece they would be worth it, but 10 points for a single shot is just not worth it unless like a combi-weapon it can be tailored to what you need.

Much better to run in one of 2 ways:

A. Stock with a pod. They aren't bad stock at all and are strong for their price.
B. Chainfist and double flamer. This gives good anti-hoard and anti-armor for a small price increase.

I love a good dreadstorm list personally.

2x motf on bikes
3 ironclads
3 stock dreads
3 venerables in shooty mode
4 squads of scouts with speeders

its a fun, fluffy double CAD list that no one will complain about playing againgst.

I like the double heavy flamer.
I don't trust a single melta shot, so I'd rather focus on frying infantry. The DCCW give me enough anti tank

Ive been debating the uses of chainfist against seismic hammer myself. Chainfist is a guaranteed pen most of the time, but its only AP2, so less chance of explode. The hammer is AP1, meaning more of a chance to explode, but slightly less likely to pen (still Str 10 though!) Otherwise I run mine with HF, stormbolter to keep it cheap, dual HF if i can. All of the Ironclads anti tank is going to be in close combat, and it will need something to keep it from being bogged down in infantry for the rest of the game.

I usually run them bone stock in a drop pod - it's pretty flexible on it's own. If you want more anti-horde in your army, then dual heavy flamers is pretty effective (especially considering how you can basically place an ironclad right up next to one of their infantry squads). If you want more anti-armor, then buying a couple Hunter killer missiles can be worthwhile.

Not a fan of the chainfist. The regular powerfist shots are usually enough to wreck a tank, and you lose the meltagun if you swap it.

I don't believe you lose the melta gun. It just says swap hammer for chain fist. Not hammer and melta gun.

That said, in a mirror match, I'd rather have the chain fist.

Well, I only ever play against Orks, Eldar, and AM, so no real need for the chainfist. Plus, it looks really stupid, lol (obviously not taken into consideration when determining its viability/utility, but worth mentioning nonetheless).

Hey, Rule of Cool is the second most important rule in the game for me.
The first being, always show respect and manners to your opponent.
