I'm spoilering the stuff below because I don't want to turn you away from HeroClix if it's something you want to play. The sculpts are sometimes cool the paintjobs could be better, and the material could be a little more resilient, but I realize why it isn't. It's a decent game with a very well supported community from both the players standpoint AND WizKids!
That being said, my spoilers contain what I might consider useful about the monetary side of things (note: they don't make monsterclix anymore)
Spoiler:
I can't play it anymore. The frenetic release schedule became too much (I started in mid December 2013 for the Avengers Vs. X-Men event) in that time I've seen the following releases: Invincible Iron Man Yu-Gi-Oh Series 1 (Starter released in December) (Series 2 comes out in the next month or two) AvX (Organized Play Kit) Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes Captain America The Winter Soldier Deadpool X-Men Days of Future Past War of Light Organized Play event (6 month event with 90+ figures only available by going to events) Lord of the Rings the Return of the King Guardians of the Galaxy (movie) 2014 Convention Exclusives (War of Light Black and White Lantern packs, Zombie Galactus, Black Lantern Anti-Monitor, Doop, etc... it's a long list for figs only available at like 3 shows) Guardians of the Galaxy (comic)
WizKids releases product in 2-4 ways 1) Counter Top Display: These are single figure foil packs that come 24 figs to a box. Small primer releases for majors sets and movie related sets are released in the CTD format (as was the Yu-Gi-Oh set) 2) Fast Forces: 5-6 figure set that gives you a few figures and a map 3) Starter Set: Similar to the Fast Forces the starter also gives you Power and Abilities Card and the 2014 Rulebook 4) 5 Figure Boosters: These are the larger sets they include 5 figures to a 12-13 dollar booster pack. These sets generally include 90 figures or so, and are generally the most common to see...
It's a decent game, but heaven help you if you really get into it... The 'second hand' market will make GW's prices seem sane. In every set there are 6 rarities, common, uncommon, rare, super rare, chase, and prime. The first four are pretty self explanatory. Chases are figures in each set that are the "most sought after" generally because they're good, but also because in a case (20 boosters or 2 CTD displays) there is generally only 1 chase or 1 prime. Primes are alternate version of Commons, Uncommons, Rares and Super Rares released in a set. They are generally better than the regular version and like chases are hard to get. So each set comes with a variety of figures under those rarities, things like War of Light have chases (8 to be exact) and each of those tend to go for 150 dollars due to how hard it is to get War of Light figs. Chases from non event sets generally start at 50 bucks and work their way up to almost 100 dollars in some case. All for a figure the size of a Space Marine.
You're thinking, "Alf, that's fething crazy!" It can get worse. For movie sets (ala Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy) there are special cases sent to Target or other stores that include chases you can only get at those locations. So your local hobby store might have a box of Guardians of the Galaxy, but the chase in that box won't be the same as the one from your local Target and generally won't be worth as much. (Rocket Raccoon from the GotG movie set went for like 75 bucks it's first month of release).
*sigh* it's a decent game, but I can't handle trying to collect them all...
Sorry if this turns you away from the game, it's just something I wish someone had told me when I first started.
