Hello all,

I was wondering what people's opinions are regarding using 1:72 aircraft as air support in flames of war? It is going to be a lot quicker, easier and cheaper for me to buy a 1:72 Airfix Hawker Typhoon, then track down a 1:100 or 1:144 scale one.

Is 1:72 too big for FOW aircraft? Does anyone here use 1:72 aircraft in FOW? Would you object to an opponent using a 1:72 model? Would a 1:72 be easier to hit with anti-aircraft fire, due to its bigger size?

The one on the left is 1:144, the right is 1:72. There's quite a size difference as can be seen. It's really down to who you play, if they allow it then it's all good, but be aware it will be a lot easier for his anti-air to draw line of sight.

You bought the 1:72 originally for flames or are you into model aircraft ? Is the 1:44 a revel microwings?

Wouldn't have an issue with someone using 1:72 scale stuff, we are using 1:144 in a 1:100 game as it is and all the benefits go to the opponent of whoever is using it for flak guns so go for it.

Both very nicely done as well

I don't own them I found these when looking around for a alternatives to 1:144 for FoW like you are. http://www.swannysmodels.com/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1291838774 second post.

Like Leopard said all using larger scale aircraft only benefits your opponent, so using It shouldn't be an problem.

Yea, Just bought a 1:144 revel microwings Typhoon, off the internet. May buy a 1:72 airfix as an interim measure locally if I need it urgently for a game that may happen.

They're pretty cheap. I'll report back when I get it/them seeing as people seem interested.

Not at all I use 1:100 planes (JU 87 Stuka, Sturmovik and Polikarpov I-16) for FoW because I hate under scaled figures. I have some fairly long term plans to construct 1:144 size aircraft shaped bases/template out of smoky perspex which will also give the impression of the aircraft's shadow on the battlefield.

We dont even use planes. We just use a dice as a counter.

I would like to see how that turns out,

I want a Hawker Typhoon 1:100, can only find 1:48, 1:72, 1:144 etc. Might jut buy a few 144 scale to represent air power and leave it at that.

Yea, many people I know use 1:100, but as Bonegrinder said, their ain't much in the way of 1:100 scale typhoons.

Anyway, way I see it, 1:144 is the official battlefront scale for aircraft, so no one can whine and try and stop you from using a 1:144 scale aeroplane.

There are quite a few 1:100 scale aircraft about, there was a part work magazine a while back doing one a month. 1:72 is far too large, 1:144 too small but if you mount it high on a rod you could pretend it's a bit of forced perspective.

I think the 1/144 scale gives you the best 'silhouette' for gaming purposes. The slightly underscaled model works for a plane that should be higher above the table than it really is.

Well from the models' perspective 1:144 makes more sense as the plane is above them. But from the players perspective it is too small. I would even go so far as to say that 1:100 is too small, as the plane in real life would be higher, and thus bigger in our godlike view of the battlefield. So 1:72 is the way to go with regard to appearance realism. (I'm being a little bit silly here )

Time to buy a bunch of different models to represent different altitudes

Just glad BF have not tried to shoehorn an 'airwar' sub game in here, How FoW handles air strikes is one of the better methods I've seen in games.

I have heard of the likes of wings of glory used as a side game to actually model the air intercepts but you start to get into campaign territory where point values are ignored there.
