This is something I've been wondering about. The 'phant has no base, so what determines if it is in terrain? Is it enough for one of its talons to be on a piece of terrain? Is it possible for it to ignore terrain pieces altogether by moving over them without touching them with its legs?
Am I correct in assuming that it effectively has four small bases, that is, its 'feet'? So models can go under it freely as long as the distance to the legs is sufficient?

There are quite a few walkers which don't have a 'base' - defilers, triarch stalkers, etc.
As far as I know, their 'base' is considered to be the area defined by their 'feet' - I see no reason the same wouldn't apply to a gargantuan creature or superheavy.
Certainly, being able to move under a model would be very unusual.

There is a difference. Walkers without bases still use the normal Vehicle rules of measuring to the hull.
Non-vehicle models without bases are not covered.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Exactly. I know how my Defiler works, after all. But the Hierophant is not a vehicle.

I've wondered about this as well... if you make a giant square base for it then I would assume you could perform some pretty effective multi charges?

And what, exactly, determines how large the base should be?
Square or circle?

Single models can not Multi Charge. Ashiraya wrote: And what, exactly, determines how large the base should be? Square or circle? Whatever looks right. Use your best judgement, ask the people you play with and get/make a base that fits, but is not too large or too small for it One this size should do...

Remember that if you benefit from a big base, any blasts touching the edge hit and any obstructions a hair too thin to fit through block you/trigger terrain tests (that you auto-pass I assume...). Not one wants to play the "ballerina defiler" who goes on toe to hide behind a lamppost and then gains 5" on the multi-charge into two shooty units by becoming a yoga instructor.

I would never put it on a base. Would it even be game legal, because models are meant to use the bases they were supplied with?
Every Hierophant I have ever seen used has defined its "base" as a trapezoid formed between the points where it touches the ground. While this would prevent models from passing under it, it is far too cool not to have swarms of lesser Tyranids scuttling beneath it. That'd be houseruling, though.

Since its a GMC it should have a base. Forgeworld does not provide one however for a few reasons i think.
1. It would just add to packaging costs and having a resin base of that size would lead to many issues.
2. The model is so much easier to actually play with and place on the table without one (due to terrain and what not).
I suggest that since it is not a vehicle (and thus not having a hull to measure too, such as with the defiler and soulgrinder), you should consider it in B2B with anything that comes within .25inch's of its legs or anywhere under its body.
This means that it would be considered in difficult terrain using the same measurements.

Its not really legal without it. All the rules for non-vehicles function around a model's base so if it doesn't have one it kinda breaks the game.

That's true, but having a base of that size on the board kind of breaks the game, too!
I think it's something that should be determined on an opponent-by-opponent basis, but the things suggested here about imaginary bases work just fine.

No it doesn't, not for a model that size.

I've been wondering about the Hierophant base/no base as well.
If you do give it a base the size of the display one on the forge world site, I wonder how the heck you would place it /move on a table with a fair amount of terrain. The base would be larger than some terrain pieces. I feel sorry for poor trees in forest / jungle terrain.
I've seen some people use an oval base with the flyer stand going into it's center mass, but that would be ignoring the legs.
Maybe tie string around each leg so it gives a border without being too troublesome?

If you don't use a base with a Hierophant you should be able to make an imaginary base for him however big you like, to equal out the ticking timebomb that is your Hierophant's legs before they eventually give out. That model needs a sturdy base, and preferably a support rod in the center of its torso.

Well it makes terrain nearly impossible to walk around.
I would have a base that just barely fits all its legs on it, and then have the base be detachable in the event of terrain problems.

I am nearly done with making the base for mine. I cut a 13 inch round plastic base as this was the smallest that all 4 feet would fit on. I embedded 5 large rare earth magnets in that base, that allows for a smaller 5 inch base to be attached to it in the center. That 5 inch base is built up and has a 1/4 inch acrylic rod that supports the beast so its legs don't bend and give out. When sitting on the 5 inch base alone its claws are about 1/4 inch of of the table, when both bases are attached it will blend into the scenic 13 inch base.
