If you like cowboy beebop you should definitely check out Trigun. Post apocalyptic sci fi with lots of humor plus a interesting if not deep story line.

Elfen lied, is also a good one. Sci fi, pretty dark. not for kids cause there is some boobage and lots of gore. I knew the anime before I knew infinity and to me Aleph reminded me of the anime. or at least made me think that the anime's story could be Aleph when they were first experimenting with proxy humans and such.

Also Ergo Proxy is awesome. so +2 for that suggestion (because I can that's why)

I'm going to get a lot of flak for it, but I'm going to say, skip the GITS movies. I personally can't stand them or the praise that they get and I can't help but feel that they're a piss poor representation of Ghost in The Shell. They're pretty much nothing like the source material and suffer from Mamoru Oshii's excessive ego stroking. Skip it and read the comic instead or watch Stand Alone Complex.

However, GITS in general isn't all that similar to Infinity aside from the hacking and optical camo. Track down Appleseed instead, since that's where most of Infinity's influence comes from. The Landmates, the cyborgs, the rabbit ear sensor antennae, the genetic modifications, the artificial humans... it's all there. I mean, just look at the Squalo and the Guijia and tell me that they aren't just a bit influenced by Appleseed.

If you want a fun, short powered armor anime though, check out the generally forgotten MADOX-01.

I prefer the prequels (Arise) that are slowly being released. Probably unpopular stance to take.

I've enjoyed Sidonia, though I feel it has more in common with Yamato and Macross Frontier.

I like stand alone complex the most out of the GITS stuff I have seen. Havent watched arise yet but noticed it on Netflix the other day.

Gits ranking in my opinion

-Movie
-stand alone complex
-2nd gig and innocence both have their good and bad bits
-arise

Ghost in the shell is a series where you can watch dubs, however I dislike the tachikoma voices in english, I can deal with high pitch voices better in japanese than english so I choose sub

Anime
-Black Lagoon
-Cowboy bebop
-Trigun

Manga to read
Tokyo tank police- basically moderators
Appleseed

Tsutomu Nihei's works don't really fit into the high-tech cyberpunk motif. He's usually more of a dark sci-fi horror type. Knight of Sidonia is more space opera than anything though and is definitely not the best choice if you're looking for something Infinity-ish.

Worst post ever.
GITS is considered a modern classic for a reason. And it has a great deal to do with Infinity. The infighting between supposed allied factions and even intrafaction is very Infinity-like. Also, the small armored vehicles and powered armor and enhanced humanoids all share the same themes and subjects.
But space ships in GITS, throw in some Appleseed and you got Infinity.

And I was serious about Mardock Scramble. Great stuff.

Ghost In the Shell IS Infinity without the space ships and aliens. I would also like to suggest Renaissance. It's not Japanese, it's French...and it's fantastic. Good straight up cyber punk stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh7s32XRScQ

I'll +1 this part.

Schoolkid has advanced powerarmour suit drop into his lap and creates hijinks. What's the fascination with ramen, though? I don't get it.

You know that old joke about there being only two kinds of college student? The ramen eater and the mac&cheese eater. I was neither.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

The important thing to remember as a student is that wine goes with food beer is food.

As a student, you can't really afford good wine.

Life is too short to drink BAD wine - so drink beer instead.

My uni had 3 bars on campus. With really cheap beer.

Trigun is good fun. I'll second the comment that Knights of Sidonia isn't very similar to Infinity. Very futuristic, but very grim. Haven't watched/read Appleseed, but CB definitely pulled a lot of inspiration from it.

And subbed versions are sometimes WAY better than dubbed ones. Naruto becomes actually tolerable without the obnoxious English actor voicing the title character.
