This is a good one for YMDC. In a game the other day my opponent got the Strategic Genius trait. It is the one that give you +1 to seize the initiative & also says " whilst you warlord is alive, you can re-roll ANY (emphasis mine) reserve rolls (failed or successful.)"

My opponent was excited to get this as he was playing a drop pod list, ok fine. But he was even more excited because he said he would be re-rolling MY reserve rolls as well! Huh??? It was his opinion the word "ANY" in the warlord trait conferred to any reserve roll in the game by either side. It is my opinion the word "ANY" in the trait was referring to failed AND successful reserve roll made by you.

I said fine and agreed to his interpretation,mi only had 2 reserve squads anyhow, but it has been bugging me since.

What say readers of YMDC?

Strategic Genius, allows re-rolls of all reserve rolls in the game opponents and yours, successful or failed, OR allows re-rolls of any of YOUR reserve rolls successful or failed?

It is the general consensus of this board that, to Re-roll any die, you need to be the original roller to begin with.
I will leave it to other people who are better with words to explain why.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

I agree with Jinx on this one. To be eligible for a re-roll, you must be the 'roller' of the original die. You cannot re-roll another player's die or dice.

I think this as well, but friends of mine insist it holds true even over the opponent's dice.

I wouldn't agree with me outright, personally I feel it is something that could be better defined.
I state 'general conclusions of the board' when I am not entirely convinced either way what is correct but want the majority view to be recognized.

The Re-roll rules state:

"In some situations, the rules allow you to re-roll a dice. This is exactly what it sounds like – pick up the dice you wish to re-roll, and roll it again." (General Principles chapter, re-rolls section).

This tells us that you can only re-roll dice that you rolled because you can not roll a die again that you have not rolled in the first place.

There is another trait, for oponent. -1 to reserve roll. Only this modify oponents rolls.

This is what makes the most sense to me. If I play that guy again and he gets that trait I will try this angle and see how far I get.

I'd agree with the majority here. If you didn't roll the dice in the first place, there's nothing to re-roll.

If you were allowed to re-roll your opponents dice, the rule would be worded like the Venerable rule, but even it says you can force your opponent to re-roll, not re-roll it your self.

The new Dark Eldar codex has a strange rule in similar situation (and bad wording) with a warlord trait:

2. Labyrinthine Cunning.
The Dark Eldar player can re-roll the dice when they attempt to Seize the Initiative, determine if the Night Fighting rules are in effect, and when they make Reserve Rolls.

Who are 'they'? If it refers to 'Dark Eldar player', why use 'they' instead of 'he/she'? Some friends of mine think 'they' refers to both players, so you'd be able to re-roll the opponent's dice. I don't agree with this (same as Strategic Genius)... how coud you re-roll something you didn't roll first?

Or did they forget an 's' in 'player', meaning 'Dark Eldar players'? This makes more sense.

The English language doesn't have a gender neutral "that person there" word. "They" is used in place of such a word. They does not refer to both players. They refers to the player that was previously mentioned, namely, the Dark Eldar player. Challenge your friends to refer to a genderless person without being rude and calling them an 'it'.

'One'.

Though it is a little archaic, and 'they' is far more common in conversational writing.

They is far more clear then Any, as the Authors set the subject matter of 'Dark Eldar Player' at the start of the sentence.

This is why YOU roll to hit, YOU roll to wound. Then you give the dice over to the opponent to roll the saves. So he can reroll his own saves.
