Imperial Recruit in Training

Hi Everybody.
So, ive always loved the warhammer universe, and have decided to start painting.
After reading a few novels etc i fell in love with the Imperial Fists, and Decided to start at the top with a chapter master and honor guard.
You will notice, im a fan of "kit bashing"
But sadly i dont have any friends that paint, so i need some feedback from some fellow painters.
Positive/Negative, bring it on
Also, sorry for the bad pics, im new to pictures also...
Thanks!

You need to use the image function:

(had to add a space after the url bit)

OP: Use the link found in the text field labeled "Forums:" to the right underneath your picture in your gallery:
I think you're off to a good start paint-wise, but they yellow needs some depth. A brown or sepia wash in the recesses would look nice.
As far as the kitbashing goes, I don't think the Grey Knight armor "fits" with with the Iron Fists aesthetic. However, they're your models so feel free to make them however you please?
Out of curiosity, what do you plan on running these guys as on the tabletop?

Sorry for that blunder, i used the page link and not the image link.
These will be my honor guard, with relic blades.
so i wanted them to look very different.
and i doubt i will use them too much for games as they are expensive on points.
(ive never played a game either.. lol)
As for the Yellow, im going to try a different approach for my next batch (tactical squads)
Base of averland with sepia recess and yriel highlights? or maybe ushbati bone or something.
and yellow glaze im thinking.
Thanks for the response Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, is glaze even worth it?

Looking great, especially those power blades and the purple robes. However, the yellow, as mentioned, needs some depth. To that end, I'd just suggest a simple wash of Agrax Earthshade (or as I call it, Miracle Wash) over what you have currently, it will add depth instantly, and then all you need to do is re-highlight the edges in your original colour!
The glaze will help if you highlight a lot and then want to unify the tone a bit more (say you highlighted with a drybrush of Ushbati over Averland, the glaze will tie it all together and basically form a mid-tone), but really you can't go wrong with Basecoat-Agrax-Basecoat-highlight!
Welcome to Dakka, hope to see more of your work soon!

Thank you so much!
I will definately try a wash of agrax/sepia over the averland (going to try both washes and see which i prefer)
Might also try a drybrush highlight, sometimes my brush control is average and end up with fat lines when i want thin ones.
But trial and error.
Glad you like the purple robes. I think i might go back and paint my chapter masters 'loin cloth' the same as the champions.
I will be carrying this style throughout the army.
Thanks again

Ah, well, if you get the cramps from edge highlighting, work with drybrushing, that's what I do. Some things to remember:
-Always drybrush very, very dry.
-Deepen the colours and blend the highlights with washes and glazes.
For the rest, I like it. Your yellows are not too bright, neither too muted, and I like the use of GK parts for your honour guard.

I'm just not getting an Honor Guard vibe. Honestly, I'm getting a Grey Knights painted yellow vibe. When I did my HG, I used the metal Veterans. Much more blingy and Honor Guardy looking. I'm not sure if they're still available. Otherwise, great job with a difficult color to work with.

Imperial Recruit in Training

So, a bit of an update.
Sorry for the quality. Taken on an iphone.
Finished my first two tactical marines. One being a sergeant.
These were primed white. Based in averland. Washed in agrax and then redone in averland.
Simple edge highlights in ushbati.
I glazed the sergeant with the orange juice glaze. And I cant tell a difference.
Still need to base and do the water transfers.
Feedback?

Looking good, but I'd maybe add some darker details on the armour as everything bar the guns is quite bright. It'd help to see one with a finished base as that can really help to tie all the parts of the armour together.

These are looking great. I love the black fingers on the sergeant's fist and the purple tabards.
Can't wait to see them based and finished.

Like the Honor Guard. I went the same with using GK as mine HG because they get a 2+ save and PA and AA should not look the same. Love the purple helps the model pop more and the purple pops along with it.

Hey guys!
Thank you very much for the compliments!
Glad people are liking the purple.
I was inspired by the romans, how purple was their symbol of royalty etc.
I have just finished re-painting my chapter master's tabard purple. And totally re-did his shield.
Will post pictures shortly.
And as for the darkness of the armour, the pictures dont do justice
I really need a decent camera.
But I think I will make the armour joints at knees and elbows a bit darker.
Thanks again! Automatically Appended Next Post: Haskell wrote:Like the Honor Guard. I went the same with using GK as mine HG because they get a 2+ save and PA and AA should not look the same. Love the purple helps the model pop more and the purple pops along with it.
Yeah thats the main reason I used these guys.
Just to differentiate between the standard power armour and the artificer armour.
Thanks

Personally I disagree with the darker detail statement - I love the bright look! Finished basing though, that's something I'm definitely looking forward to seeing on these guys. The only darkness I'd want to see added to these lovely looking models would be the chapter iconography on their shoulderpads.
