Hi all,
This might have been touched in another post, but I got to know what most people think of using alternate companies minis to play 40k.
For example using Anvil Industry Exolords to play as space marines.

Three Color Minimum

Most people are okay with it aslong as sizes match more or less and options and wargear are properly shown

It depends on your gaming group, so what we say really doesn't matter. You really need to be asking them, not a random group on the internet whom has no bearing on the thoughts of your local group.

In our gaming group we don't mind at all as long as it remotely looks like something it should represent. I know people with 3rd party and customized models that are nicely painted and look way better than someone's unpainted GW models.

Well I ask you fine folks cause I don't always play in the same group, so I'm mostly trying to figure out a general consensus from most groups out there. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I ask, cause I heard some tournaments still hold true the whole must use mostly GW and some gamers might also follow that policy

This is why I always take a biopsy from each conscript model to make sure my portable spectrograph reads that only proper GW plastic and paints were used. Some filthy WAAC cheating thieves actually try to use Vallejo paint, depriving GW of the money needed to post a FAQ. That said, I'll generally let someone get away without a notarized document validating they used only approved GW tools, brushes and glue the first time they show up in the club. The first time.
More seriously, I'm fine with you playing empty bases as long as the empty bases don't have any special equipment and they're not near a different unit with other empty bases that can get confused. If you want to run 5 fifty man conscript blobs with ten real (as in any minis, not GW ones) guys up front and 40 empty but differently colored bases behind, I'm fine with that. Just make it clear who is the sarge, who has the good gun and let the TFC pie plates fall where they may.

Victoria Miniatures does some awesome Guard replacements and bits.
Secret Weapon Miniatures does a sweet looking 6x6 APC that could easily stand in for a Chimera or Taurox.
I think using 3rd party miniatures is awesome as hell. Lots of companies producing some excellent alternatives to lines that were either removed or no longer receiving attention, or producing models for excellent counts-as conversions.

Some third-party miniatures are the right size(ish) for, say, Guardsmen, but are obviously *not* GW Guardsmen. Some tournaments will most certainly have an issue with this. Some players will, too.
Me? I don't care. Does it look good? Is it the right size, more or less? Is it so cool the size doesn't matter? OK, let's play.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

1. Rule of Cool
2. Failing that, WYSIWYG
3. Failing #2, a proxy or two isn't the end of the world, but try to make it make sense.
If it looks awesome, it is awesome. If you want to support the game mechanics, get the rulebooks. But use whatever models strike your fancy!
(Although I can't seem to find any good counts-as Eldar models)

The thing about a percentage of GW figures or parts added to them was really something that mattered back when GW was actually providing prize support for tournaments.
It was only fair that if they put up the prize we would exclusively use their figures. There was a conversions rule that allowed for a non-GW head or weapon swap, but no more than that and the full army had to be GW product or scratch- built if there was no official model (4th ed. Plumbing endcap drop-pods)
Now that tournaments aren't sanctioned by GW there is no real cause to require the exclusive use of their products. So go crazy with alternate manufacturers and have your own brand of fun at GW's expense.
