Subject: Dark Souls - a Space Marine chapter [Update: Name, more Marines, Honour Guard, Deredeo]
Okay, so this thread is mainly to keep me motivated and log the process of building my custom SM chapter. I hope to keep the updates steady and take away suggestions to incorporate into my army.
I started 40k with the 3rd edition boxed set and build an Ultramarine force throughout 3rd and partially 4th edition. After taking a 10 year-ish break, I came back at the beginning of 2014 after browsing 40k images and thinking back how cool this hobby was. I searched the web for nearby gaming groups, contaced them, digged out my boxes of Space Marines from my parents' house and I was back in the hobby!
Really disliking the over-the-top fluff of the Ultramarines now, I decided to create a custom chapter, fitted for my needs, with whatever units I want and not fethed by some piece of fluff GW might decide to write in the future.
I'm in the process of a lot of things simultaneously, so I will post fluff and background, WIP of kits and models, pictures of old Ultramarines (paint stripped and still painted), pictures of my attempts to get back into painting, and various other stuff.
Dark Souls
Short summary
Spoiler:
The Dark Souls were founded in the 26th founding on the urges of Inquisitor Fyld Larayne to counter the increasing alien threats, for which he seemed the Deathwatch no longer capable enough. The chapter master, captains, psykers, apothecarii and sergeants were mainly recruited from the Deathwatch Blackshields to maximize the combat effectiveness of the chapter from an early stage.
Gene material was drawn from different chapters, making the chapter very versatile but hard to maintain the gene seed purity. Due to this difficulty only one company was created in the founding and the chapter size has only increased marginally since then.
The Dark Souls have developed a cult-like habit to redeem their faults and sins before their inevitable death. Their power armours are inscribed not with the achievements they reached, but with their failures, to remind themselves and their battle brothers constantly what they hope to redeem upon death.
Fyld Larayne - Rise of an inquisitor
Spoiler:
The Threat
Spoiler:
Seeing the Imperium more and more in danger of alien takeovers, especially from the Tyranids and Tau, Fyld Larayne influenced various sources, either by intimidation or calling in favours, pressing his plans of creating a Space Marine chapter through the Senate of Terra.
Fyld Larayne and the Seven Swords
Spoiler:
Knowing he would have difficulty to push his plans through the senate of terra Larayne searched for like-minded inquisitors, either through official statements over inquisitorial channels or contacting former allies to back up his demands and gain more power and control. He rallied a group of six other individuals and they called themselves "The Seven Swords".
The Seven Swords
Fyld Larayne: Inquisitor, rarely seen on the battlefield but he is a tactical genius and the chapter recognizes him as one of their own. It is said, that without his strategies, a chapter consisting of only roughly a company, it would have long been wiped out.
Martel Dorovin / Cypher: A hulking human with incredible strength, speed and reflexes. Often rumoured to be a Space Marine. Appears mysteriously on the battlefield, clad in power armour and robes, two blazing pistols in hands and often single-handedly turning the tide of battle. Rarley seen on the chapter space ships and only talks to Larayne.
Lorel Waingard / Donovan Waingard: Ruler of House Waingard on the knight world Anarekis. Lorel retired and is now Lord of House Waingard, while his heir, Donovan is leading the battles. While Lorel is known for his clashes of power with Larayne, his son Donovan is void of all emotions and known as a fearless, but also ruthless, leader in battle.
Lev Antarioch: Inquisitor, mainly affiliated with the Ordo Xenos. He's a grunt, often deploying alongside the Space Marines and leading the spearhead. Has a large scar across his face, infliced by Larayne in a duel for life. Lying in his own blood and fearing his death, Antarioch begged for his life and Larayne granted it under the sole condition of unwavering loyalty to his cause. Antarioch accepted and is trying to erase the shame he brought upon himself.
Martin van Hege: Former mentor of Fyld Larayne. Died in the battle on Vergen as his Stormraven was shot down. A rescue team could only pick up the remains of him and the Space Marines.
Yen Lombardi: Replaced Martin van Hegen. Inquisitor with close ties to the Ordo Hereticus and the Ecclesiarchy. Lives with the Space Marines at all times and supports the chaplains in the prayers.
Randall Farley / Warren Farley: Brothers, both inquisitors. Randall was initially one of the Seven Swords, his brother replaced him upon his death. Maintains a large stock of alien and ancient technology upon the chapter's space ships and uses them regularly in battle. Close ties to craftworld Exondorus.
Korwen van Olderon: Ex-Planetary Governor of Vergen. Fyld Larayne was the responsible inquisitor and delayed the Exterminatus of Vergen as long as he could, allowing the Governor and a large amount of the civilians and the military to escape. Having lost their homeworld, the popuation of Vergen are now space faring with large vessels, fitted for living and long distance travel. Has developed into a militaristic society, breeding for the Imperial Guard and sometimes even procuding a fitted recruit for the "Chapter Name".
The Founding of the Dark Souls
Spoiler:
This chapter would only have one mission, pushing back alien invasions and reporting only to the Inquisition, meaning, Fyld Larayne. This chapter would have to be versatile and prepared for combat as soon as possible.
To accomplish this, gene seeds were taken from various chapters, breeding units of Space Marines for specific combat roles. The Deathwatch was used to draft apothecarii from the specific chapters and forward them to the new chapter. Additionally, Deathwatch Marines, mainly Blackshields, were recruited to serve as instructors, Veteran Sergeants, Captains and Chapter Master.
Replacements for high-ranking officers were also recruited from the Deathwatch in the beginning, but this tradition slowly dies out as the chater develops more and more character on their own and alienates themselves with custom rituals and cult-like habits. Very few Marines are Deathwatch Marines in the present day, but the bonds remain and the Dark Souls are often the first chapter to respond to distress signals of a Deathwatch Kill-Team that needs support to eliminate a threat that they no longer can contain.
As a result of this, single Deathwatch Kill-Teams are often seen fighting alongside the Dark Souls in larger battles.
Colour scheme Ex-Deathwatch members still wear the Deathwatch colours with black power armour and a silver left arm, including the Deathwatch shoulder pad. In addition, it has become a habit for chapter marines that rise in high ranking positions to also adopt these colours and don a Deathwatch shoulder pad. The chapter marines have black power armour, a blood-red left arm and an ornate left shoulder pad. The right shoulder pad is reserved for the inscription of their failures or orante armour. There is no official chapter symbol, although the Inquisition "I" is very prominent.
Tactical Marine

Sergeant
Spoiler:
Veteran
Spoiler:
Terminator
Spoiler:
Sooo... that's it for now, maybe the first update will be this evening.
What do you think about the colour scheme? I'm still not totally set on it.
And the name... I have the Deathwatch book which lets you create your own chapter, including two tables for the name. Dark Souls being one of my favourite video games, this instantly jumped to my mind as a chapter name when reading the name lists. But I don't know yet... suggestions?

I like the color scheme especially with the fluff of the chapter you wrote up. But maybe to break up the eventual sea of red on the left side of your army you could make the veterans, sergeants and general hq have the traditional silver shoulder and arm or maybe make some models all black showing them as a black shield. As for a name of the chapter good luck with that

I would add something to your colours for sgts and veterans. As it is they probably won't be that obvious on the tabletop.
Even if it just a coloured rim on the red pad or something?
I like the idea behind the chapter though. I've been toying with some ever so similar, but templar rather than deathwatch, for a while, so this might be my kick up the bum.
Thanks for answering, I'll give your colour suggestions a thought. And I think I have already something in mind... hope it will follow with the next update.
So! Pictures!
Kitbashed captain with Deathwatch shoulder pad, SS (from the Terminator kit) and Teeth of Terra (made out of 2 Vanguard chainswords).
Kitbashed Cypher to mislead my chapter and serve his own needs.
Command squad with stormshields and special weapons (magnetized). Blurry thing in the back is the 5th member, a FW apothecary.
Sternguard squad. I reaaaaally love this kit. First thing I needed to buy when I came back to 40k.
More Sternguards, got them for a good price on Ebay.
First new Tac squad. Mixed with Sternguard bits.
Sergeant for the Devastator squad.
Terminators! Also, everything is magnetized.
Paint stripping with isopropanol. The "dust" on the bottom was their blue paint once.
Paint stripped and in a bath of dishsoap water to get rid of the isopropanol/alcohol.
Oh look! Ultramarines waiting to get paint stripped and recycled. Also, a few DV minis in the top right corner.
My Ultramarine captain. I think he won't get paint stripped, I still like the paintjob I did 10+ years ago.
Hope you like the pictures.
Next update will be an improved paint scheme, vehicles and mayyyyyyyybe a test painted model. I'm kind of busy at the moment with Space Hulk and Operation Icestorm.

Small update:
After a long time avoiding it, the first Sergeant is finally painted.
He still needs some work on the left arm and the soft amour, but I like the outcome after a break this long.
Here he is with the first paint scheme at his side.
And all by himself.

I'm liking what I see so far. Will have to keep an eye on this thread.
Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

So far so good. I have always been a fan of Deathwatch and a chapter based off of it sounds awesome.
You know how each chapter denotes tactical, veteran, assault, and heavy weapon status by different colored helmets? You could do it on the arm instead.
Black for tactical, silver for veteran, red for devastator, blue for assault. Or what ever colors you want to use. Even thought I am digging the red arm.
As for a chapter name. Emperors Repentance/Atonement/Penitance, Repentors, etc.

I have seen this only with Blood Angels so far. I've played Ultramarines before and never seen this, except red helmets for Sergeants and white ones for Veterans. Have to read into this.

I like Repentors. Have to keep that name in mind. Thanks!

I wasn't sure by looking at the paint-a-marine, but the color scheme really came together on that Sarge. And your builds are really nice too Can't argue with magnets. Have you ever looked into the ball-joint magnet method?
I think I'll have to keep an eye out here.

Don't know exactly what I would need a ball-joint magnet for... maybe Predator sponsons? All infantry was magnetized with circular magnets.

How about the name "the redacted" , they have had their names redacted from all imperial records since their failures, and must reprove themselves worthy. Since they were drawn from the Deathwatch they have many traits of their own chapters, and since they have failed at one point with the deathwatch maybe these could all be one that were to be sent back to their chapters, but their chapters said "not just NO "
Getting a very A-Team vibe from them, it could be the black and red like the van, of the fact that they are elite of the elite. So they could be the "I-Team" as well.

Update!
I finally managed to snap some pictures. I was very disctraced from 40k since the last update, my daugther was born, modding and playing Skyrim and (yes, I like it a lot - don't judge me) Age of Sigmar.
Anyway, picture time.
Some Scouts. The shotguns can be replaced with Bolters. Only three guys, because I still have the old metal Shotgun/Bolter/Sniper Scouts.
Scout Sergeant with Bolt and Plasma Pistol. The Plasma Pistol is magnetized and can be replaced with any combi weapon. Bolter Scout I built out of the LSS crew.
Tac Squad 2. Switched the Sergeant in this picture to Squad 1, that's why he has a Combi-Melta. The other Sergeant has now a Combi-Plasma. The other 4 Marines are on my painting board. Wip pictures will follow.
Had a lot of fun building my Honour Guard out of the Masters of the Chapter and FW Mk IV Command kit. Last two guys (Hammer and another not-pictured Axe guy are still WIP)
Deredeo Dreadnought. Very nice model and great rules.
