--It seems like I do one of these every 5 or 6 months, but there *is* a new-ish edition out so...--

So I've recently cataloged my space marine collection, and was wondering if you more seasoned/in-the-loop players thought I could cobble together a list that's at least semi-competitive, something I might lose with but that would give me a fighting chance at a random gamestore battle (unlikely to have time for a tournament). I've got codex space marines and codex dark angels, I'd prefer to stay away from data whatevers or allies outside of those books for monetary reasons
It doesn't need to be a specific list all pointed-out, just a general type of list, specific chapter tactics and unit choices, stuff like that would be close enough.

Space marine Pile O' Doom:
Now with blurry photo!

Infantry/bikes:
40 tactical marines
20 more marines, suitable for veterans or sternguard due to robes
10 scouts (15 if I convert the LSS crew to have bases)
25 terminators, DVx3, Aobr, 5 custom that may not do outside of DA
14 total bikes
4 jump packs army wide =/
3 DV librarians, lots of exta bits to asemble most any captain/chaplain/chaptermaster/motf/etc
1 kitbashed MotF/Techmarine

There are enough guns that I could probably manage 1-2 devastator squads. I have a stupid amount of missiles and a bunch of heavy bolters (yawn to both still right?) but maybe enough lascannons and plasma (especially if taking a 10 strong squad and splitting it is viable). I have lots of lascannons that could be converted to fit marines, and the same goes with most other guns, to an extent.

Vehicles:
up to 8 rhinos/variants, 2 predators with sponsons, would have to buy/convert any demolisher/ww/new AA tanks/etc parts. Parts to make several of them razorbacks.
3 drop pods
4 dreadnoughts, can field them however, would have to convert riflemen or ironclads but am fairly confident of doing so.
Land raider (standard LC pattern)
Land speeder storm
3x land speeders (parts to make 2 legitimate typhoons, enough missile pods to possibly cover a third)
Stormtalon

Potential IG/AM allies:
I don't have theh AM codex, but if it were absolutely necessary to use guard allies to make what I have work then I've got a bunch of Mantic corporation marines that could fill in for guardsmen, or with maybe one box of cadians I could scrape troops+HQ to also field:

Leman russ with no sponsons.
Chimera
Valkyrie (probably enough lascannons to do a vendetta).

I've don't have any of the fortifications, would prefer to use a list without them but I guess buying the defenseline wouldn't kill me either.

Soooo... What could one cobble together out of that pile of goodies that could actually hold it's own?

Am I just up poop creek without a paddle if I don't have a fancy new Knight or some other formation like 3 stormravens or whatever it is they do now? I'm not particularly worried about winning a tournament but I'd like to put up a good show against some random gamestore opponent if I get the chance to play sometime.

Thanks for looking!

Marines in rhinos work great with ravenwing chapter tactics.

Guyz in drop pods are one of the best troops for maelstorm missions.

You've got lots of nice stuff - put it to use.

I think you mean Raven Guard, the one that gives you Scout on all non-Bulky troops and means with a Rhino you can have the enemy board edge in rapid-fire range on T1!

Looking at that, I'd suggest the following:

The core of the army should be 3-4 Tactical Squads in Rhinos, giving you a decent, mobile and adaptable bulk to the army. These guys will go after objectives, take and hold areas and provide fire support.

In the Drop Pods, you want Sternguard loaded up with a few Combi-weapons, as well as probably a Dreadnought or two (if possible, Ironclads, if not, HF/Assault Cannon), and maybe some Termies to support those if you have the points. I'd also supplement with with a Bike Squadron (and if you fancy converting one, a kitted up Captain/CM on bike kicks ass) and maybe the Speeders.

Basically, you want to put together a hard-hitting and mobile force where, by T2, the enemy will be dealing with bikes, Rhinos and the contents of your drop pods, preferably against half or so of their own force. You have a lot of mobility with this kind of set up, so against anyone not spamming bikes/jump packs, you should be able to pick and choose where the fighting takes place.

^That style reminds me of how I used to play DE. I hadn't really considered ravenguard, even though the dark grey of my custom chapter would fit pretty well. Seems kind of silly to do them without *any* jump dudes though? I guess a sub-chapter could have a different MO. May have to toy around with battlescribe and see what the points allow, tactical squads in rhinos make me happy and fast things are fun to move, if you've got to break out the tape, may as well use a lot of it amirite?

With that collection you can go a lot of different ways. It might be your comment about HBs, but something said “Hybrid drop/gunline Imperial Fist” to me.

You have 3 pods. Sternguard, Dreadnought, Tac Squad
The talon for air support.
LSS w/bolter scouts
2x dev squads, one with MLs, one with HBs. With tank hunter, IF dev MLs aren’t bad.
A pair of TML/HB speeders is a nice chunk of firepower.
Pred, auto/las, or full LC
HQ of your chioce in a razor with either a command squad or half a tactical squad.

My early morning, still drinking my coffee math puts that around 1,500 roughly.

Another option would be an Iron Hands mechanized column. Terminators in the LR, 2 preds, all your speeders, bikes riding perimeter (preferably with a captain/CM leading them and making them troops) Talon flying above, and whatever tac squads you can fit in rhinos/razors to finish up your points.

Well, RG don't actually have more Jump-Packers than anyone else, so there's no requirement to use them!

An alternative, though, would be to take White Scars CT with a counts-as Khan as your commander. You keep Scout thanks to his abilities, gain Skilled Rider and improved HOW on your bikes, your bikes in squads of 5 or more are troops, and the only things you lose are less options for HQ and the JP traits you aren't using anyway.

Hmm.

Damn you guys, 4 posts in and already too many good ideas!

From the sound of it I can just paint anything and be doing alright. Curses, less of an excuse than ever to not get out the brush.

You could turn one of the preds into a FW tank like this one . Apologies for the pic.

Oh and I should mention the kit itself comes with a rhino chassis and various bits to take it back to the older Mk style. Plus a Heavy Conversion beamer and Plasma Destroyer (the latter of which is suitable if you're running Dark Angels)
