How am I to know which FW models are good without forking out huge money for the various rule books, when I don't even know which books apply to which models? If I were to buy one model which is compatible with Chaos, which should I go for?

I don't okay Chaos, but I've heard good things about the Throne of Skulls. (Or whatever the Khorney Lord of War is called.)

Welcome to the Freakshow!

Lord of skulls is plastic, and in.Apocalypse

Pretty much all chaos is in ia13 now.

As for finding out what's good, have a look into the models and see what you like, then ask. Easiest way round.

As GW the company wants you to. go head first without looking and buy ALL DA THINGS

But really the best way is to find some one who has the book and take a look. online or otherwise.

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature.

There are a large number of reviews out there. 1d4chan has tactics articles for each army which discuss the units, frontlinegaming has a tactics article which touches on most of the notable tournament units.

If you have an army or unit you are interested in the best way is to start a thread here asking about it.

Depends on what sort of Chaos you're looking for: Daemons, CSM, Traitor Guard, etc.

And which gametype: regular 40k, Apoc, etc.

I'll give you some tips on what is generally accepted to be good if you'd like. Things are likely to change soon though with the new FW chaos book.

Basically, you don't. Unless you spend a lot of time researching through blogs, forums and wikis looking for overviews, you're totally in the dark. It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't broken up among several Imperial Armor books.

A lot of the little stuff, like decimators and blight drones are fun, and decently balanced. You wont find much that will straight up break the game.

The lords of war are where some really outshine others.

You have to get the book first.

Either buy the IA: Apocalypse latest edition, or have someone lend it to you, or find a PDF / epub / mobi file that appeared for no reason in your downloads / torrents folder.

Definitely don't buy those insanely expensive models before you've read the rules

Proxy them while playing with your friends. There's no test like field test

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union

My understanding is that a few critical models are not (Lord of Skulls, for example):

Since you are not allowed to download scans I suggest you just read threads on it.
There are a lot of places where people discuss how good the models are.

But I do have to say that Forgeworld is pretty okay with their book-prices as you can see here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/IMPERIAL_ARMOUR_VOLUME_THIRTEEN_WAR_MACHINES_OF_THE_LOST_AND_THE_DAMNED_SPECIAL_EDITION.html

It's a special edition and it contains all of the following models:

In my opinion that's not too bad for 50GBP.

50 GBP sounds like a lot to me given that all you get for the special edition edition is a slip case and a poster. I'll buy the standard edition if its significantly cheaper. There's a few FW models I've been wanting for awhile now but have a hard time justifying the price. One book for all the chaos might spur me to make the plunge. FW is expensive enough without needing a separate book for each model you want, especially with outlandish shipping or hassle of pooling orders to get free shipping.

Also, I would never buy a model without knowing its rules first. I want models that look cool and play well, not one or the other.

Yes, they only list FW models. The LOS is plastic and GW, so they wouldn't print the rules there. Pretty much Every chaos model is in there though, think even the gargantuan daemon lords are. Just missing some hq s

Jubb - 45 quid for the normal book. It's a lovely poster and cover.

If 50GBP sounds expensive to you, forget about ForgeWorld

Ok, after looking through them all, I quite like the look of the Land Raider Spartan. It says it can carry 25 Power Armoured Dudes, but does the new rule in 7th Ed allowing transports to carry Battle Brothers carry over to this? I'm thinking 20 Bloodletters plus 1 Herald of Khorne in there. Drive straight up to the enemy ranks, have a Dirge Caster on the Land Raider, and unleash absolute chaos.

One question about the Spartan, does it suffer from the "stumpiness" of some of the other Land Raider variants? It's hard to tell from the pictures.

Also, how long do you guys speculate before IA13 might potentially spontaneously appear in my downloads folder?

Hmm, not sure. But I would guess you are allowed to do that.
1. You can transport BB's.
2. They are BB's.
=> So you are allowed to transport them as long as they are infantry.

Stumpiness?

We shouldn't discuss that last thing.

You can do it with standard WH40k rules, but I was wondering how the FW rules interacted with the standard rules, especially considering this rule was introduced in 7th.

Stumpiness. Some of the Land Raider variants seem stumpy, which I don't like. For example...

Compare the two Land Raider variants.

This picture has the Spartan positioned beside a stumpy Proteus, and it looks less stumpy, but it's hard to tell from the angle.

Yes, you can carry bb in there. No power armoured only rule.
