Hey guys!
I was wondering if you guys could help me pin point something. I was just looking through the GW store after I posted a cost to point ratio thread on here.. and I was looking at 'moderately' elite armies. And how well do they do? This is based on solely the codex you play. No allies. Excluding the imperial knights.
Obviously Grey knights springs to mind. And with their point cost being so high they are the most elite army I would say. (Excluding imperial knights ofc) bug after reading some threads and battle reports it appears they've been some way neutered. No effective long range anti tank. No AA; and with a lot of their old content being shifted to the inquisition books they've lost a lot of their flavour.
so what elite(ish) army out there can do well? Or are the days of small armies over and are we now playing more of a game where they don't work. As with securing multiple objectives and such.
Thank you

Any Space Marines, pretty much. Necrons are tough to kill. And Eldar are the best codex, currently. So, yeah.

With the space marines can you actually optimise a list with fewer models??
Are daemons able to by taking more FMC and greater daemons?
How about dark eldar? If you were to spam vehicles?

Dark Eldar are squishy. So are Daemons, but if you go cheesy with the Grimoire and Nurgle Daemon Princes, I guess sure, that'll work.
And Space Marines can do well with few models. Bikes, Terminators, Centurions.

I wonder what an elite Ork army would look like...

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works. |

Nob bikers come to mind right away. With painboys and KFF big meks on bikes, it might even work. If you want to add some fun factor to it, get a SAG big mek on a bike and add it to the unit. I would say field a warboss on a bike, but that would mean you need to take more detachments or go unbound. I'm not sure how expensive stuff like this would cost as I don't have my codex near me right now, but I think it might be possible to get 2 of these in 2000 points. Probably easier done in unbound where you can save the points from the grots that unlock the multiple detachments.
Alternatively, you could take meganobs in battlewagons. I used to run a list like that in 5th, it was tons of fun! You could probably use the Ghazghkull's Bullyboys formation - the meganobs get WS5, Fearless and Fear. Not bad all in all.

The most effective elite armies I have seen excluding imperial knights are;
*SM Centurion Star w/ GK Draigo for GoI. Usually ~30 models total.
*CD FMC circus with 5 greater daemons or DPs and ~12 nurgling bases or ~22 pink horrors.
Biker armies also have less than 50 models as well. Landraider based armies can also do reasonably well if done correctly.
Mechdar and seer council can also have pretty low model counts under 50 models and do very well.

Yeah I was thinking Iyanden would have done quite well? And different SM builds. I just 'personally' find space marines so bland!
Can GK do well with a draigo star still? It's a real shame GK got gutted so bad. They had lovely models :/

Iyanden is good but not a top tier build. If you get good with it you can still give most opponents a run for their money.
GK are way better than the internet would have you believe. I have found that I win more than I loose with them and I have found the new codex to be more fun to play.
