Hi folks I am looking for advice. When I was a young teenager I absolutely loved warhammer, I still love the lore and read an occasional book or two.

But I have been thinking I have a really old army and I do not know what to do with it. If I should start again, if what I have is useable or if I should just give them to someone and just enjoy the memories.
I now have the time and space to actually play late on thursdays at the store but I know no one and dont really want to go with this old ass army and no idea how to play anymore or with the new rules.

I have 3 full armies in all honesty but Fantasy was my favourite I have D Eldar, Tau, and D Elves.
I always remembered my army as huge but looking at the list it doesnt seem so big now. For the Dark Elves my list is as follows:

So folks, any advice on what to do?

You have a decent army there. Witches are now core so youd need more if you want them. But the cold ones plus malus would be an excellent hammer. If you want to play go for it.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

I used to use them as that because of his ruling. Granted I dont know if it has changed or not. But I used to have a heavy Sorc usage with a lot of 12 man crossbows, my COK as the hammer and unit or spears/corsairs for some support and 2 Bolt throwers.
But it is nice that you didnt say everything was needing replaced lol.

Get more driders and brolocks. They're the best things in the entire book. Plus they synergise with the knight star pretty well

I've just unearthed my old Dark Elf army, a quick rebase and some new movement trays and it was ready to go.
Adding in more models is no problem as they'll be available on eBay and far cheaper. Adding in new unit types is a little harder as the new models are far finer and it'd be a shame to paint them with the same 1990s paint scheme/quality.
I'm a little stuck too!
Currently I'm just playing a few games, finding out what works and if I'm enjoying myself I may slowly replace models for the current ones unit by unit as I paint/afford them.

Everyone: No.

They're mandatory though. You need at least two units nowadays as chaff and fast fav are so important.

darkavenger. No offense but your version of "mandatory" and mine are different.

From everything I have heard you say, you play very competitive games. That's fine if that's how you want to play, some people don't. If he's simply looking to see if he likes how the game plays nothing is "mandatory", yes they are great choices but not mandatory to have fun.

If he's unsure whether or not he even wants to play. What he has is usable, he should just talk to his opponent & let him know he's new & is looking for a casual teaching/learning game at which point the opponent should go easy to explain the new rules.

Before taking thedarkavenger seriously, one should read his posts in the thread about the workings of the Sacrificial Dagger here:http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/617915.page.

DE are fortunate in that nearly everything in the army book works, and most of it works very well indeed when used properly.

He means that a group of people argued with me when they don't know how to interpret the basic concept of rules.

Oh give it a rest both of you. TDA is a power gamer, not that it's a bad thing. I base this on your talk of how you can break so many things and seem to pride yourself on building tough as nails lists.

If you want to play that way, listen to him on list building and tactics and the like. If you don't, just ignore him. He will give you sound advice on what is good, however don't let what is good determine what is fun, unless that is how you enjoy the game.

It's not powergaming. It's a group saying that you have to ignore part of a rule you have no permission to ignore to follow the rules.

But, I concede your point regarding fun. HOWEVER, I'm no powergamer. I'm just a normal UK tournament player. And I write the normal kind of lists you expect to see from the major players.

Shas, if it was just about TDA being a powergamer I wouldn't have a problem.

The issue is that he's a BAD powergamer who doesn't understand the rules of what he's trying to powergame WITH... as the discussion on the SacDag demonstrates quite clearly, along with his constant 'DE all cav RULES and everything else DE SUCKS!' comments.

Wow, I've had nightmares that follow a similar structure to that thread...

DE stuff works full stop. My mate rolls over my Lizards every time and he plays a static, non moving, occasionally going backwards sort of game. My Chameleon Skinks ruin his fast cav though!

Pointy ear'd feckers.

Saw this thread and thought I should contribute, but I hope I don't revive an old debate by doing so. To try and settle something at least, thedarkavenger is a very knowledgeable DE player but his failing is that often he can't accept other people's ideas/lists work. A Fast Cav heavy list is indeed a great, competitive way to play DE, but certainly not the only way, as monders said. Pretty much everything works in the book, should you want to use it.

In terms of what you've got (and it is a great starting point for an army, btw), I'd first concentrate on getting your smaller units up to size, which allows you to use them in games. For example, your Witch Elves and Executioners could both do with being bumped up to 30 strong (and you might want to proxy a couple of warriors as Black Guard too, using some of the spare bits if you do get some more Execs). If you're not looking to spend too much, perhaps just ignore the Executioners, since 5 redundant models isn't too high of a price to pay. However, I will say that, personally, I consider executioners to be the best unit in the book and I rarely leave home without them (metaphorically speaking, of course ).

You will also need a BSB, but other than that you have plenty of characters.

Thirdly, as thedarkavenger said, some fast cav would be useful. Firstly because it's good and secondly because you need some chaff of some sort. I'd recommend getting two boxes of the Dark Riders/Warlocks and magnetising them so you can run two units of either, or one unit of both. I'd always recommend at least one unit of warlocks though as, in my opinion, they're only narrowly beaten by Executioners to the title of best unit in the book.

Finally, it's important to remember that most DE units need some sort of support. You have all the magical support you could need but Executioners like having either a Death Hag or Tullaris in tow to give them frenzy, and both your Witch Elves and Corsairs would appreciate the addition of a Cauldron of Blood, which greatly increases their effectiveness and damage output.

Whilst you don't need to do all of the above to field a decent, full-sized army, adding all of those things would leave you with enough models to field a wide variety of equally strong lists, which is a fantastic position to be in and should let you get the most out of your army and your return to the hobby.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, just let me know!

You mean the entire thread of everybody telling me that rules work by ignoring half of them when you don't have permission to? Sure. I'm just going to continue my life with the knowledge of how rules actually work.
