An entry I put together for the 3rd Annual Nerdcademy Painting Comp run by nerdfest09. The comp had a 'Sin City Style' theme - so greyscale, with a single colour splash.
I haven't tried painting in greyscale before, but had been wanting to give it a go... so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. And so here's the end result:
Very happy with the result as a first attempt... although in hindsight, he probably should have had a purity seal or something on his right shoulder pad to break up the dark a little.

Any reason you chose yellow?
Looks great though.
But yellow seems happy, cheerful and thoughtful rather than the theme you are after (I assume).
Awesome though. I wouldnt mind something like this as a token in my army.

Yup... that's pretty much what I was after
In my head, it was a 'Life returning from the ashes of war' sort of thing.

Fantastic!
I immediately thought Schindler's List (girl in the red coat) for the starkness and bright focal point. I really love greyscale and think it works marvelously on miniatures, and your piece simply reinforces that belief.
My only suggestion would be to change the lime green background around the diorama. The green just seems too bright and competes with the yellow flower for the viewer's attention.

Neat.
What actually impresses me most about this, though, is the sculpt. I like how the dead marine has been there just long enough to get a little pitted and a few weeds to grow around him, but not long enough that he's covered in shrubbery or completely rusted out.
Which goes really well with the flower. The motif of "things are finally starting to be nice again", rather than "this happened a long time ago, and people might not even remember it" or "this just happened and the wounds are still fresh.
Nicely executed.

Yeah, I had originally intended to go with black or white... but was in a bit of a rush to get the photos done due to the comp deadline and having to set my photo rig back up first... White made it far too dark, and black washed it out fr too much, and I didn't have time to tinker with the pics to make it look like it should. The green came up perfect.
