Ferrous Ironclaw, a Warsmith of the Iron Warriors, said:

We fight the long war, not through vain notions of duty and honour, but through a far purer purpose: hatred. At the height of our glory we were betrayed and cast out by our kin.

Guilliman, Dorn, Sanguinius - these are names I curse. Horus, Perturabo, Angron - these are names I revere, names I would follow to the very end.

So apparently he's saying that Guilliman, Dorn and Sanguinius, the most prominent of the Loyalist Primarchs, perpetrated some form of "casting out"?

Weren't the Traitor Legions the ones doing the betrayal? Since when were they themselves betrayed by the Loyalists?

The Iron Warriors are a little bit different from the rest of their traitor kin.

After destroying their home planet due to a world wide rebellion, Perturabo felt as though the Emperor could never forgive him, so he cast his lot in with Horus instead.

Plus, no one liked them anyway, Perty had pretty poor social skills, and all the other Primarchs used him for two things. Attacking fortifications, and then holding them afterwards. They did all the hard work, and got none of the credit.

I would put it down to the whole Horus being the true Emperor angle. They deem those that did not side with them being the true traitors as the Emperor was not worthy of his position.

So they were the wronged ones, not those that turned their back on the Emperor. I guess the height of the Iron Warriors glory was tearing down the walls of the palace during the siege of Terra, them being cast out lead to their retreat to the Eye of Terror.

Maybe?

I'd guess it's just an illustration of the nature of people to attempt to justify their actions and wrap them in a veneer of "We were always the right ones! It's those other people's fault!!!!"

Perturabo and the Iron Warriors felt wronged/slighted, rightly or wrongly, and so, wrap it in terms of "being betrayed" by the Emperor and the Loyalist Primarchs, to justify why they threw in with Horus and the Chaos lot.

Pretty much a teenager mentality...seems common among the Primarchs, really.

As an Iron Warriors fanatic the only ones who could actually claim they were betrayed and have a pretty good case are the Thousand Sons, The Iron Warriors were wronged and mistreated that no one could argue against.

At least it wasn't I.Ron Smithy.

No one ever accused GW/BL of being subtle.

The Iron Warriors always saw themselves as being unappreciated and sprunned, they no doubt saw siding with Horus as the only way to end their "unjust" treatment and thus where "forced into it" it's a "point of view" thing I guess

What I don't understand is Ironclaw talking about Horus being returned, Horus seems deader than dead, his body soul and clones all destroyed.

Mabey he meant in goal and vision, but not necessarily in person. Also keep in mind he seems slightly delusional at times.

Well, no one ever accused Chaos Marines of being all right in the head, especially after 10k years in the Warp.

I'm sure they developed their own myths and legends, just as the Imperium did. Some may be crazed madness, others wrapped up around some kernel of truth. Are probably a few that hold that Horus may someday return, just as some in the Imperium are convinced the Emperor will as well.

Whether it's true or not in the 40K Universe? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'd lean towards no since his soul was finally obliterated by the Emperor. Allegedly.

Not sure where this quote stands in current fluff. I remember it from the 3rd edition codex or so, but do they still use it?

Yep, the long war is still being fought. they still fight for the death of the false Emperor, the war that Horus started long ago.

Possibly. I wonder why he chose Sanguinius out of the other 7 loyalists though. Sanguinius was probably one of the nicest to Perturabo. On the other hand, Khan and the Lion seem to have been at odds with him.

And the quote wouldn't work for an Emperor's Child, so it won't work well as a generic Chaos quote.

By the way, does BL use the term "Emperor's Child"?

Lexicanum has a good write up of the fluff on Iron Warriors.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Iron_Warriors

The way I have always understood it, their hatred of the Imperium came from the fact other legions got more credit then they did. They were overshadowed by their brothers and felt disgruntled so they rebelled.

Horus offered glory, which was more important during the Great Crusade.

They rebelled because they commited genocide on Olympia in one of Perturabo's fits of rage, They thought they will not be forgiven by the Emperor besides the fact they were treated as Imperial Army Garrison troops instead of Astartes for the Entire Crusade.
