Up until now, I've used almost exclusively GW bits and models for my 40k (I have used third party skulls etc. for basing), but I'm considering making the leap to using conversion bits from other sources. What are the pros and cons of this?

In my opinion

Pros

Greater diversity in my models. I play Chaos so this is important.
Different heads, I'm no longer restricted to angry bald dudes.
I think the pros list is pretty obvious.

Cons

Can really only use conversion bits, as whole models rarely match the 40k aesthetic.
Won't be able to play in the GW shop (my main place for playing).
It will make the guys in the shop (who have become my friends) sad. :(

The fact that I won't be able to play with those models in GW is the biggest one for me. There is another shop, but I don't want to have to leave my main gaming group just because I want my models to look cooler. But, I want my models to look cool too, and they're my models, so I should be able to make them look however I please. I know that's what the GW guys would tell me if I got them to be honest (outside GW working hours). So, what should I do? I'm undecided.

Even if you're modding using mainly GW core parts with 3rd party addons? Still can't play there?

It's frowned upon no? Don't they prefer people to only play with products that can be bought from GW? If third party add-ons are fine, then I'm good to go, no?

Sounds like something to talk to the store owner about.

And since GW doesnt do official tournaments anymore, you dont have to worry about not being able to play in one.

Depends on the store, but the company line is mostly "Don't take the piss". Some managers seem to take it as a 100% no non GW and can get difficult even about resin bases or scratch built ork stuff, some are very liberal and as long as the basics of the model is obviously GW or scratch built they are happy.

They've never had any problem with any of my scratchbuilt stuff before, and one time they commented that my basing on a model was impressive and I winked saying "and it's made entirely from GW products too!" and they laughed. So they'll probably be cool with this, but I'll clear it with them beforehand.
