I've not had much chance to read the 7th ed rule book yet and didn't need to do this much in 6th ed, so thought I'd ask on here for a quick answer.

How do you go about shooting the quad gun/icarus pattern lascannon that's behind and aegis defense line. Does it get a cover save from the Aegis?

I'm wanting to try my Crimson Hunter out at the weekend, but know my friend will definitely have one in his list

I'm pretty sure it will get a cover save of 4+ from the Aegis.

Probably a stupid question, but should I focus my initial shooting on that, or go after other targets and ignore it?

Depends, it might be easier to kill the unit manning the quad gun (they'll have much less toughness).

If you can place your crimson hunter out of line of sight of the quad-gun when it comes in, then ignore it. That's not always possible, but you'd be surprised how often you can do it.

If not, then you just have to decide. Is the crimson hunter important enough to your strategy that you want to make sure it can do its thing? Or do you not mind if it has to jink? Considering the fact that the Quad Gun can shoot at your wave serpents as well as the Hunter, it's probably worth taking it out early.

Gun mounts have long-but-limited range. Just stay out of that range. Intercept shots are fired at the end of Movement IIRC, and targets where you stop moving. Or, somehow stop out of LOS of the gun.
Bring the CH on at a very tight angle, and use the Vector Dancer rule to point at something to shoot. You can use that to turn-move-turn each turn, and shuttle back and forth along the table edge.
It keeps you out of range of most things.

IIRC it does not get the cover automatically, but only is it is obscured by the ADL. So if you have some warp spiders/jetbikes zoom around behind it, you should be able to get a clean shot. Assuming he didn’t just box up around the gun (I know I do)

The gun still needs 25% obscured to get the cover like everything else behind a line. Also the gun has a 48" range so you're most likely not going to stay out of its range. If you can kill it just put a lot of wounds on it. It's 2 wounds with 3 up armor. My opponents usually go for it right away or are usually forced to snap fire their flyer as they usually will be jinking.

If it's an Icarus LC I would probably just ignore it - I have played mine many times vs flyers and haven't taken out a single thing with it (1 shot is just not enough to guarantee causing the damage you want). The Quad Gun however is definitely worth taking out - it can glance most AV12 flyers to death in one round of shooting, and is twin linked meaning it can even target your ground troops with not bad odds of hitting on a rerolled snap fire. Don't forget too, you can poison gun emplacements, so get those hellfire shells cracking! (oh, and sniper rifles).

If in doubt, frag it out...

A quad gun's S7 shots make a mess of Eldar AV10 aircraft.
But the comment about sniper rifles is a good one.

Thanks for all the replies. My opponent is likely to have a quad gun, as he's brought one to every game since I got the model a year ago..............................shamed to admit it, but it's been sat in it's box all that time. I didn't want to be shredded on the first turn I actually use it

We've not played many games with a flyer, just my mates vendetta which blew up my quad gun without taking any damage from it. I guess it will depend what other armour/flyers are on the board, and what the biggest threat is.
