Hi there. I've been interested in Tyranids for a while, and now that they've given them back drop pods... I'm really thinking about taking the plunge.
I'd start off with a small 500pt army that would represent my theme - Nidzilla. To that end I drafted this list.
Old One Eye
Hormagaunts x10
Warriors x3
Venom Cannon
Carnifex
2x Twin-Linked Deathspitters
It's bang on 500pts and fits the theme, but I'm wondering how effective people would find it.
If you faced that at 500pts what would your reaction be? How would you face it? Would you enjoy it?

Well, Id swap old one eye out for a different HQ with a waaaaay smaller points cost, and maybe grab a second Fex, if your points allow it. OOE has never really stood out from regular fexes imo, and at that small of a points cost that is alot of points tied up in a single HQ.
Not bad...but OOE is a poor example of a HQ. For only a few more points (or the same ) you could run a Hive Tyrant, she's a MC, so it would still fit the "theme".
Late entry: My favorite low point Monster is Tyranofex, with Thorax Hive. Two templates, Haywire if you run Electro-bugs, and a Torrent on the Acid spray. All in a T6 multi wound 2+ save mountain sized Bug. I normally add in Adrenal Glands for 200 all told.

OOE is a fun HQ to run, but not really a serious comp. HQ. Flyrant or even a Tervigon is actually a better HQ at this level.
Also the Venom Cannon is a terrible gun anywhere but the new pods (cus 5 of them) or in Living Artillery Node (Cus reroll + pinning).
To beat it some rockets or a battle cannon on the warriors. Now you have no synapse, so the hormie's will start eating each other. Then take down the Dakkafex, ignore OOE. Lastly kill off enough hormie's to make them break.
Looks "OK" Though if you lose the Spinefists you save 24, and it is +4, so you can spend that 20 on something else...At 500, even Wings are an "option" more than a "must have". So if you magnitise, you can use all sorts of options.
I'm not totally sold on DS Rippers as Troops anyway, so it would be "OK" by me if somebody wanted Gaunts instead. (say two Broods, x10 of Termagants, then spend the 10 you saved on something)
