Subject: Aegis Defence Line vs Promethium Relay Pipe

Promethium Relay Pipe: 23" long (3 'long', 4 'short', taking each section to be equal to an Aegis long or short section), 4+ cover, non-vehicle models within 2" using a Flamer type weapon gain the Torrent special rule. Passing a cover save whilst behind the pipe risks that the unit takes d6 S4 AP5 Ignores Cover hits. The pipe has the option to include up to 6 Obstacles, each 6" long. Tanglewire, Barricades, Tank traps. Rules found in Stronghold Assault.
Do people think this is worth taking instead of an Aegis? Just how valuable would all infantry squads in a defensive line to have Torrent flamers and heavy flamers be, compared to losing the Quad Gun emplacement of the Aegis? In terms of points, the Pipe is cheaper than the Defence line, and the same cost as an Aegis + Quad gun with 6 barricades.

Absolutely brutal vs assault/mid ranged infantry in the open or in ot transports. Not really worth it vs mostly everything else.

Best not to write out the complete rules for the thing. Copyright and all.
Also depends on the army. The Relay doesn't have the +2 bonus of going to ground. Lack of coms-relay can also be a pain.
Ork Burna boys are great behind it, IG not so much.

Yeah, at some point I had a plan to acquire some pipes and void shield generators and stick a bunch of Sisters with rending heavy flamers behind them.
The issue is a long range army will still just ignore the torrents and munch them from afar.

Do you reckon that there is a line where the number of flamers makes it worth while, but not before that? How possible would it be to set the pipe exactly at the edge of deployment, Maelstrom missions in the table centre line (therefore 12" away) and so have a flamer heavy army definitely be able to swamp the objectives with templates?

I'd say so. Using the relay comes with risk.
10 Guardsmen with one flamer may take a fair few hits from exploding pipe, but not gain much.
If you're going to use it, try and get the most out of it.

Its usually not worth it.
The one army that I can see using it for great effect though, is hardly using it for the cover.
Farsight enclaves.
With alot of double-flamer suits.
Jumping around, throwing turrent flamer shots everywhere.

Orks dude
Burna Boys are hilarious behind this thing.
And you can stick your Artillery behind it as well, as T7 grots aren't bothered much by S4 exploding pipes. You can always add non-exploding barricades to it if you want something that doesn't go boom.

This was my hope... The specific context I want to use it in is as a Krieg Siege Regiment gun line. Long range artillery and infantry with all flamers.
