Hey Dakka,
I was browsing the news websites and came across this story...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30035666
For the work blocked...
Police and fire officials are searching for a tiger on the loose in a town outside Paris, local authorities say.
A woman alerted officials after spotting the big cat in a supermarket car park in Montevrain, east of the French capital, local media reported.
The Montevrain council said on its Facebook page that an area of woodland had been roped off.
Residents have been advised to stay indoors, and children are being kept in schools.
It was unclear where the animal came from, though there is a big cat park near Montevrain.
The owner of the lntermarche supermarket in Montevrain said his wife had spotted the animal at about 08:30 (07:30 GMT).
"She didn't get out of the car and called me to say 'I think I saw a lynx'," he was quoted as saying. The woman took a photograph that appears to show a large cat.
Le Parisien newspaper said several local residents had sighted the animal.
Specialists said the animal's track's were those of a young tiger. An official from the mayor's office said they had been able to trace the animal to the woodland by following its prints, and that a helicopter was assisting police and fire officials in the search.
The Montevrain mayor's office dismissed the idea that the tiger could have escaped from a circus that was in the town until Saturday, Le Parisien reported.
EuroDisney, which operates nearby Disneyland Paris, said it kept no tigers.
I love how Euro Disney have come out and said "We don't keep Tigers".

In Africa and Asia if villagers complain about a big cat being near their homes and livestock westerners expect them to be more forward thinking in terms of conservation and sharing the planet responsibly.
This continues until and if the sightings become reports of a confirmed man-killer.
However a loose big cat in a developed western country is a concern for rapid deployment of media, a tolerated panic reaching far further than the habitat range of a single animal, causing people to avoid green spaces with any undergrowth, and the almost inevitable involvement of police or military sniper teams.
Yet we are the civilised ones somehow.

Except in the West US of course. We have mountain lions on the edge of the LA basin. I've been in five feet of one on a trail there.

I think that it's because, in "Western" countries, the big cats aren't native (except for cougars and stuff in N.A.). It being away from its natural range means that it lacks regular prey, and that there is a much larger chance that it decides to go after something common and fairly defenseless (such as your average suburbanite). It also means that it was probably brought to the area by humans, and so is used to them. This increases the risk that it moves into close proximity with humans, leading to increased risk of an unfortunate incident.

Well, we do not have those big cats around here, but kind of do the same with those big dogs called wolves. Like we voluntarily bring some in, and then pass laws forbidding to shoot them except in very, very specific cases.

I bet it'll be an old ginger tabby and somebody stretching the truth to breaking point. If not, most British children know that tigers are in fact quite friendly and enjoy nothing more than a spot of tea. No need for alarm.

It happens here with Cougars and Deer. Some people I know of came home to find a Cougar in their garage and there are always big cat sightings at the edge of town. I have seen Deer on campus at BYU and a friend of mine hit one on his motorcycle as he was riding it in town. He got stove up pretty good.

Right, because that's the only reason that "Westerners expect them to be more forward thinking in terms of conservation and sharing the planet responsibly".
Has nothing to do with the black market trade in big cat body parts for ridiculous purposes like as cures for sterility in males...
Also, let's pretend as well that the big cats constantly attack their livestock and not go after things like wild animals living in their native habitat...
Oh, and let's pretend as well that these big cats weren't being hunted simply for BEING THERE without ever attacking livestock or humans--which is something that was quite common in Asia.
However a loose big cat in a developed western country is a concern for rapid deployment of media, a tolerated panic reaching far further than the habitat range of a single animal, causing people to avoid green spaces with any undergrowth, and the almost inevitable involvement of police or military sniper teams.
A 'loose big cat in a developed western country' is something that can end very badly and very quickly, depending upon the big cat's age and the cat's familiarity with people.
The mountain lions that occasionally pass through my neighborhood here in NC are very unfamiliar with people and react as wild animals do--they flee when confronted with loud noises and lots of motion.
Yet we are the civilised ones somehow.
I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I feel pretty civilized not ingesting severed tiger testicles.
