Buffalo, NY

So for those who don't watch news concerning the US, or those who live in denial, just south of Buffalo, NY has been hit hard with a massive storm.

Some places, have gotten over 6 feet of snow, while about a mile away, the sun was shining.

While most people have made it home, some are stuck at work, and unfortunately a few have died sitting in their cars.

Of course this did not stop the San Jose Sharks from visiting, nor did it stop the Sabre fans from the northern area from going to the game.

To give you an idea of what has been happening:

Buffalo, NY

George Takei gave a shout out on facebook.

A few notes.

First, it's not Buffalo (well mostly not Buffalo), it's actually the southern suburbs know as South Towns.

Second, we are the city of good neighbors. People are helping, and there are people ready to go help clear out the 200,000+ tons of snow at Ralph Wilson Stadium for Sundays football game.

Third, if you ever want a taste of Canada, without going there, come to Buffalo. We get the snow, we serve Canadian beer, and we sell poutine...mmmm...poutine...

Buffalo is so Canadian we have signs on the thruway, reminding visitors we ar an "All-America City".

The thing that people really don't get, is in this area you drive north to get away from the snow. Buffalo is nestled between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, As such, the southern area gets hit hard (we're looking at 8 feet in some places), while in the north towns, we got about 3-4 inches.

And of course as Ned Stark so fondly states: Winter is coming."

Naturally, on Monday it'll be in the sixties.

I'm glad I don't live in that area of NY. Who wants to spend half their day shoveling snow?

That's a fun way to spend your day, move frozen water from one spot to another.

See, people here in Michigan just shrug and deal with the fact that we will be miserable for the next four months. My buddy lives in the Upper Penninsula and was shoveling just after Halloween. Now that's screwed up.

You guys with your wacky lake-effect snow. You guys can handle 6 feet better then most places can deal with 6 inches.

Stay safe.

And be sure I-90 is clear by Tuesday, I’ll be driving through your neck of the woods then.

Yeah but we don't typically get 6 feet in one go. Uppers probably have experience with that but us Trolls don't normally

At a Place, Making Dolls Great Again

You know in Canada winters like that happen every year, when I lived in Ottawa it was guaranteed at least one or two buildings would collapse from snow.
One year it was a parking garage right near my house.
In places like that, such snowfalls are common and really delay nothing.
When I lived in the GTA it was hit by a pretty bad snowfall and it disrupted some things but Toronto and the GTA are less prepared for snow, but it's still Canada so...people don't loose their marbles when it happens.
The only "snow day" I have ever seen was during the late 90s when a rather bad ice storm knocked down a lot of trees and took out a lot of power.
Oh and once when the bus crashed...that was in 1993.

So funny to see Americans go ape over snow, Canadians laugh at you.

Nice generalization there. Northerners don't typically lose their marbles with winter.

Remember when their was less than an inch down in the south this year. Now that was a silly freak out. It's all comparison.

The point is that you guys have this storm as top headline news.

Up here, only Toronto would ever consider this major news worthy, because well, it's Toronto and they keep the army on speed dial to help them keep their driveways cleared!

It dropped into the low 30s for a few hours the other day here. Thousands died. Rusty the Mountain Dog almost stopped panting. Rodney remains in his warm kennel under a mound of blankets. He's put a "wake me when its March" sign on his door.

That's still barely half of what Toronto through Hamilton got in January '99.

Our sidewalks resembled WWI trenches, while the passable side streets were barely wide enough for a school bus to fit.
I live on the corner of a 4-way intersection, and we no longer hand visible STOP signs, just 12' snow banks. And Halton Region schools stayed open dammit!! (despite the -43 windchill, because government grant monies are more important than student & teacher lives apparently...)

Please understand something, nobody cares. We aren't talking about that snowstorm. We aren't talking about Toronto. We are talking about this snowstorm, in the lake-effected region of NY. If you want to compare it to anything compare it to the storms of '66 or '07. Again, nobody cares.

Its regularly over 113 degrees in Phoenix in the summer.
Toronto is nothing you city wussy. You want real Canadian weather you have to go to Calgary. They laugh at your wussified Toronto keisters. Dealing with both on a weekly basis, I know.

To my Canadian friends - please understand. It's not that we got 6 feet of snow. In WNY, 6 ft is a good winter. It's that we got 6 ft in a single day, with a brief reprise and then another 2 feet.

Honestly, I'm surprised how much media attention this has gotten, outside of the area. But man are time lapse videos and pics of the snow wall (which could be seen from miles away) awesome.

Oh I'm no Torontonian - my city is about a 40 min drive west of the self proclaimed center of the universe. Hell, our city is so truly Canadian we don't even believe in snow clearance because it's just going to melt come April!

Oh we get it's 8'+ of snow in only a couple of days, we typically get similar in many areas most winters as well. The good thing is though, when it happens to us, it's generally also butt numbing cold so the snow is light & powdery. (just don't drive in it, because it's a freaking nightmare!)

The real problem you guys are having right now is that it simply isn't cold, so that snow is wet and heavy. And with a big warm-up + rain on the way by the weekend, things are only going to get worse.
Hopefully city management is on the ball and is working to both remove & dump as much snow as possible into the lake, as well as making sure to dig out drain culverts & grates to try and prevent as much flash flooding as possible.
