My friend has offered to sell me some dark elves( which are quite well painted) for less than half price of the original form games workshop. I was wondering if the following kits would make a decent force or not. I'm quite a experience 40k player and wanted to give fantasy a whirl because of the large amount of players at our club at the moment. He's pffering the following kits:

2 boxes of dreadspears
2 boxes of dreadshards
2 boxes of witch elves
Hydra
Cauldron of blood including the hellebron and death hag
Assasin

Thanks

For a start, you have 4 boxes of darkshards. The other two aren't worth taking. I don't even rate darkshards. The only reason I ever use them is because I cannot be bothered to paint the equivalent points worth of dark riders.

I'd assemble the cauldron as a BSB. Then surround it by all the shooting. Don't take hydras or assassins. Not worth it.

2 boxes actually the other 2 are dreadspears, so the force I'd be receiving would be too weak because youve just said that only 1/3 of the boxes id be receiving would be useless is this correct?

Wytchs are great and throw out tons of poison attacks. With the cauldron and de abilities your now rerolling to hit and wound with poison attacks. The Haag had some great perks, id throw a bsb in that unit. You have an ok starter on your hands heavy on core but your wytchs will be your beat stick, i would get a lvl 4 sorc and go shadow magic put the sorc with the spear men and sit back.

What drew me into fantasy is that every one plays their armies different, where 40k you have tons of unit spamming and staples that every one always takes. Fantasy allows you to take a little of everything and still perform well. The game is all based on movement and magic is key.

Darkshards and dark riders are the optimal core choices. Dreadspears aren't good by any margin. Only reason you'd take them is for a sacrificial bunker. Bleakswords are the same. Witches fail against armour and are far top fragile. Against combat armies, they're okay, I guess. The only issue here is that the cauldron is infinitely better as a ranged utility piece than a combat utility piece.

Unless your friend took the Dreadshard/Bleaksword parts out of the box, the Dreadspear boxes can also be used to make Dreadshards and Bleakswords. So you have four boxes of core troops, and you're best off assembling them all as Dreadshards.

For core combat units, you want Witches (for damage output) or Corsairs (for the 4+ armor save - giving them equivalent defenses to Bleakswords - while having the equivalent damage output of Dreadspears). Your anti-armor capacity is handled by Executioners, Cold One Knights, and K-Beasts. The all-important maneuver-control is handled by Dark Riders, Harpies, and Shades... along with solo masters on Dark Pegasi; a 1+ armor save goes a long way when clearing chaff.

Utility infielders include Black Guard (Expensive, but tough to break, with good damage output and moderate antiarmor capability) and Warlocks (fast cav with S4 poison attacks AND two useful spells? YES PLEASE!).

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.
