The more I talk about 40k with other players, the more I wonder how they act when they play. When I'm playing a game with someone, especially if they have an equally fluffy list, I really like to get into the role of a Dark Angel company master. My men are brave, we hate all things xenos (I'm often referred to as the perfect imperial player, a huge space racist), and I'll jokingly be disgusted by orks and chaos.

As the battle plays out, I don't just say "shoot this guy" or "melee that guy". My marines charge in with their pistols and blades drawn, we manage to bring down 4 orks with our charge. My commander draws his blade as he issues a challenge, and lunges in with a flurry of swings. My terminators pulp a handful of fire warriors, all of them are gruesomely pulverized by our Maces of Absolution. A handful of brains explode as my librarian lets out a horrifying psychic shriek!

Are the guys at our store a bunch of ultra-nerds, or do you actually tell a story and get into character when you're playing a friend?

Can't say I've ever seen this, even years ago. I would love to create a story for my characters and name all my squads/sergeants/etc. but never that much

We have a certain level of storytelling when something awesome or strange happens. Whenever improbable rolls happen, or when models do something that looks interesting on the table (climbing all over a tank, or a single cultists running around up in the open, or bikes driving through ruins, things like that), you can't help but have some small talk trying to explain what's going on. We still talk about that Firewarrior Shas'ui who solo'd a Daemon Prince and won... and the story may or may not have become more embellished over time. It's nothing so fleshed out as the OP talks about, but it's sort of a proto-mythology that has developed in our FLGS.

Oh, and trash talk when your beatstick IC is in a challenge. I'm sure the other patrons in the store must thing we're fething weird when we're yelling at each other about heretic scum, the corpse god, the greater good, etc. That's always fun.

If we're playing competitive games, the table talk and storytelling aspect is much reduced.

My friend and I tried to get really into the Narrative gaming but we play so much standard list building stuff that we can't get into it.

I do have a group that I play with sometime where we write up battle reports as if they were first hand accounts.

I do not "roleplay" or "narrative game".
My average commentary is something like "My first Flyrant is eGrubbing the Hammerhead." *Roll* "Take one HP off. Second Flyrant is also eGrubbing."

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

Yeah, I likely wouldn't play again with someone that ran a roleplay commentary during the game. Fluff is fluff and the game is a game, and if it's written, sure I'll give it a quick read as fanfiction, but not while I'm trying to keep track of your WS, S, T my gun S and AP, where my models are moving and what cover I'm going to try to take advantage of. Please just roll and let's keep this train going. Time and place and the fun events of a game are for Battle Reports. I still remember the end of the first report I ever read.

The Hive Tyrant tore open the Commander's battle suit and ate the helpless Tau. Fangs dripping gore, it reared up tall and roared a challenge, but the no Tau units remained nearby to face her. She may have claimed her kill, but the day belonged to the Tau.

That's great in a Battle Report, but when we're at the table, please just tell me Tau won with one more Victory Point...

I don't actively roleplay, but I like to use my Krieg in line with how they act in the fluff. That means fixing bayonets and charging more often than is tactically sound (which would be never).

Only at the start of Challenges Ill do very light RP, because that can be fun and the rules almost Beg you to.

Any other time, No. I play DnD if I want to RP.

You should. Or better yet, play the actual 40k RP games.

I have been known to threaten summary execution for anyone too cowardly to hold their ground and die with their boots on...

Usually the Commissar's dead by that point, so someone has to step in.

(And another one suggesting the 40k RP games, they're fantastic!)

I like a bit of RP, but not at the expense of having an actual conversation with the person you're playing with.

A little bit of light RP thrown in during the game or during fluffy moments is totally acceptable.

I try to do it a little bit, but I'm absolutely horrible at it....the reason I never got into D&D.

Wow, we absolutely do this, pausing to discuss with each other how the battle would appear to the warriors fighting it. We laugh and joke to, but the cinematic story of the game is a massive part of the games we fight.

I'm amazed to see so many people saying not only that they don't do it, but that they would get annoyed by or laugh at someone who did. It makes me very glad I don't have to play any of them.

Ork players seem to be the most into the RP aspects at the table around here. Lots of "WAAAGH!" screaming and "'Ere we go..." at the beginning of games.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Well...they are the funniest one to RP after all.

Serious business? Pfft, they are Orks! They fight for fun! And it's funny to talk like them with the whole "OI! YOU GITZ!"

Not my group, we just talk smack through the game. Example, a group of Space Marines fire their bolsters at a brood of Termagants and fail to hit any of them. I would respond to that, especially so from the sidelines, in this manner. Hey Salamander Commander, how many Marines does it take to shoot up a Brood to pieces? Then I would answer with "none, because they can't hit the broad side of a barn."

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!
