A prominent banker was found dead in the tub of his posh downtown apartment with his throat slashed — in what detectives suspect is a suicide, police sources said on Wednesday.
Shawn D. Miller, 42, who traveled the world for Citigroup as one of its top environmental policy experts, sliced his neck and wrists with a knife inside his home at 120 Greenwich St, the sources said.
His body was found by a doorman Tuesday, after his boyfriend called building operators and said he was worried for the banker’s safety.
Miller was last seen on surveillance video getting off an elevator at about 6 p.m. Monday with a mysterious man who was not his beau. The unidentified male was later spotted on camera leaving alone.
Investigators, however, believe the death is a suicide because of the nature of the wounds and the fact a knife was found under his body, sources said.
The doorman who found Miller’s body, Tommy Perez, told investigators that he went to the victim’s apartment on Tuesday afternoon after getting a call from a concerned man who claimed to be the banker’s boyfriend, the sources said.
Miller had built a successful career in assessing the risk of investments.
In 2011, Citigroup promoted Miller to an executive position as managing director of environmental and social risk management.
Miller, who had previously worked for the World Bank, traveled frequently for Citigroup and was instrumental in designing Equator Principles, which banks widely use for establishing voluntary environmental policies.
The bank sent out a note Wednesday informing staff of Miller’s death.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our friend and colleague Shawn Miller,” read the note.
“Shawn joined Citi in 2004 and was highly regarded at Citi and across the financial services industry as a thought leader and tireless advocate for environmental and sustainable business practices. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Shawn’s family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”
The sudden death spooked residents in the building.
Resident Raul Melgoza, 42, said, “I saw it in the news. I just couldn’t believe it happened in the building.
“It’s a pretty quiet building although it’s changed a lot from buyers to more renters. I see a lot of new faces, young college kids.”

I found this kind of interesting. Apparently a whole slew of bankers have either committed suicide or something along those lines. But I personally just see it as just concidence because of the amount of stress it is to be a banker.

Oh goodness, another ridiculous conspiracy theory (not you, but I do know people that believe in this)...
Almost one million people commit suicide every year and men are four times more likely to do it than women.

Possibly? I would prefer to know more details before it's just dismissed so easily. That said i don't care enough to call out a witch hunt or put on an aluminum foil hat.
Perhaps the news is trying to suggest theories without showing how often suicides happen to high profile people. This sort of stuff needs far more information before it's dismissed.
I'd like to know more about the mysterious man. Perhaps it was just somebody that was firing him so he lost it and killed himself. Hard to say what the case may have been. Big jobs have lots of stress. As much as people criticize political leaders and such there are some jobs out there that have a lot of people's well being on the line.
Also the funny thing about conspiracies is that often the truth is much more boring and normal.

I mean who hasn't wanted to go kill I mean after a bunch of spankers bankers.
Spoiler:
Distasteful joke HURRAY!
Though I think it is tragic. I suspect it is probably just suicide just from the looks of it. I highly doubt a serial killer is specifically targeting bankers. Could be a hit man by the sounds of it. But yet again I highly doubt it is a hitman.
From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.
He worked on environmental and social policy, wrote Citi Groups responsible lending code and has not been linked to anything bad in banking.
What did happen though was he had been drinking and takeing drugs, including crystal meth, for the two days before he died.
Bankers do have high stress jobs, and the abuse they have come under in the media over the last few years cannot help, even when they have done nothing wrong, so it can't be much of a surprise when you get a few who brake.

So did he slash both wrists and then cut his throat holding the blade with his dong, or did he cut his throat first and then manage to do both wrists while spraying blood and suffocating?
The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.
I'm not surprised. Men overall tend to choose more sure-fire means of killing themselves than women.(hence the higher suicide rate. It's not so much due to lack of trying.)
And being a banker is very stressful job. Drugs didn't help.
I imagine he slit his wrists, and while he was slowly bleeding out decided to end things quicker.

Matters what type of slits where they vertical or horizontal.
Vertical would kill you quickly and you would fall unconscious. Especially if you cut an artery.

The man who played the bad guy from Dumb and Dumber killed himself that way.

"Quickly" is a matter of perspective. It's still going to take minutes.

Its a lot faster than horziontal, horziontal takes an hour at least for the blood to drain.

Well one of my suicide attempts was via slashing my throat, but I just missed the jugular. I think it's probably uncommon to some extent because it fething hurts and if you do it right you'll bleed out in no time.
The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy

Yes, but my point was that it is possible to slit your own wrists and still have time to slit your throat. That's the only place I'm going with this.
..I wonder if I got some red flags from the university I'm at for this.
I am too. I mean personally I find it interesting that the bankers are all committing suicide I wonder if that is probably going to lead to another stock market crash...

It must have been wrists first then throat, he needed time to hide the knife under his body.
Or the man he was with could have killed him. and thrown the knife and body in the bath, to wash off evidence.
Then phoned back later to alert the doorman.
Spoiler:
How did he hid the knife under himself, if he was bleeding to death, and why not just throw it on the floor?

Nothing to see here.
People commit suicide all the time, including bankers. Because one or two more happen to do so in a short space fo time has the press looking for them.
There could be a connection, but one on the grounds that is some bankers are topping themselves then other who are depressed may follow in the same manner. Basic herd thinking.

Probably. People like debating the fact of a potential serial killers. We haven't had one of those for a while.
Because you haven't heard about them, doesn't mean they aren't out there.
John Douglas, a former chief of the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, says that there are 35 to 50 active serial killers in the US at any given time.

Every slash to the neck or wrist need not be a proper job. A lot a of suicide cases have multiple slash wounds, including failed attempts, past attempts and not getting the right cut. A number survive and bear scars. Cutting yourself with as knife goes against basic human instincts, there arent many guides as to how to do the jovb properly and most people tend not to get a lot of practice.
He might have tried to slash his neck, just grazed himself felt twice about it and decided to do his wrists instead.
Also he might have slashed his neck, not enjoyed the pain much and slashed his wrists (while suffocating) to get the job done quicker.
So many different ways to account for sel;f inflicted slash wounds in neck and both wrists.

I would suspect there are more than that. The most talented serial killers hide in plain sight.
A serial killer who specialises in fake suicides is possible, and if talented can get away with murder for a long time.
Some are only caught by happenstance. Harold Shipman for instance, murdered people while working as a geriatrician. Pretty much undetectable, and it begs the question if other medical professionals have the same pastime. The FBI can only base statistics on known cases and suspicious killings and not all serial killings were suspicious.
Its a possibility but a low probability, serial killings are nevertheless very rare. Though targeting bankers may well fit the profile of some types of nut, bankers are not exactly popular.
Worriting about serial killers is like worriting over being hit by lightning, both can happen to you and you wont see the calamity if it does, but the odds are low.
