Subject: How to handle Hordes armies?

Hey everyone.
My friend that I usually play has 2 horde armies. Tyranids and Imperial Guard. I play primarily Crimson Fists Space Marines. I would like to know how to keep these hordes under control, specifically the 'nids. I haven't had too much trouble so far, but the games have been to close for comfort. The Tyranids he plays are more footsloggy, with lots of Gaunts and a few MCs thrown in there.
Thanks.

A Squad of Devastators with Heavy Bolters would probably take a toll on his forces.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!
*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs. |

12" distance, double tapping bolters, back up. Repeat until cornered. As a drop pod army and being able to pick my placement, I don't have too much trouble kiting blobs. I don't really get tarpitted by them unless I wanted to.
Just keep your models moving and focus on one problem at a time.

Well, refused flank is a common tactics.
It makes sure that not all enemy units reach your front ranks at the same time.
That is, the enemy units arrive in waves.
This gives you also time to reposition if necessary.
What your army needs is firepower, mobility, and numbers.
In this order.

I know you want to be able to deal with hordes of infantry, but don't neglect AT in either case - transports, tanks and synapse creatures are big juicy targets, and taking them out can harm his army significantly.

There is a particular unit in IA:2 that will help SM armies against horde. And that is the rapier quad heavy bolters. They cost 40pts each, come in batteries of 3 and put out 6 st5 ap4 twinlinked shots each.
A simple strategy horde players like to use is the more bodies than bullets approach. 120 pts for 18 tl hb shots (or 360 for 54) means you have the bullets to take down the bodies.
Hb devs have always been a waste of points, but for 10pts more, you get; 12 t7 wounds insteaf of 5 t5, 18 shots instead of 12, TL on all shots instead of bs5 on 3 shots. That all makes it worth it if you know you will be facing horde.
