I received in trade some models that are washed well too dark for the color scheme I am using.

I could go through the rigamorole of stripping the paint, but I also have plenty of white primer....could I just spray a coat of white primer over the paint instead? (I know this would maybe lay the paint on a bit thick, but I'm only talking bout about 4 hormogaumt/termagaunt models, and I'd think they'd blend in)

My Cold Ones and Stegadon have been under coated, base coated, under coated and painted in the last two years without stripping and seem to have come through looking ok. Suppose it depends on the state of the minis now and how good you are with a spray can!

Cool...shoudln't be too bad...they just have what appears to be 2 coats of a wash on them, and a couple have a layer of paint on the carapace portions

It may dilute some detail since you'd have two layers of primer and two layers of paint job on them, but that's really all that it'll do.

Can and should don't often appear together, this case is no different. Yes you can, but no you shouldn't.

The caveat being that if your primer lays on a very thin coat and the existing coats of paint are very thin, then you might be able to get away with it.

Why are you looking at priming or stripping as your only options? If they're already painted, just start making alterations. Use a grey to paint over any areas you can't use and go from there. Even a couple of thin layers of a grey will provide a viable base coat to build up from.

Yeah, have done this before with very thin layers of primer and an airbrush. Safe to say, for it, I was able to get away with it once and only once, the details were fading the second time I tried.

Mostly just speed...get them out of the way. I am doing a reddish wash over a white coat. These models are really dark brown wash, and it would take me multiple layers of white paint to get them back to white (with any of the white paint I have anyways)...and now that I've rechecked, I'm only talking about 2 models here....2 gaunts out of 180 total gaunts....even if some detail is lost, I think they'll blend in fine on the table.

Go for it. No-one will notice.

Just wash them well first so the primer will stick.

You can, but I would strip the paint first. It helps a lot as you know you won't clog any detail.

This was fully painted (dark green & black). I primed it with yellow ochre car primer over that & then used an airbrush:

As you can see, the details are still sharp but that'll depend on how your model is now.
