I wanted to get your guys opinion on it. I'm usually a big fan of ADB's work, but I found this novel to be boring, and scattered. It didn't seem to have the same polished feel and charecter development as his other books, was anyone else disappointed?

Honestly nothing that comes out of the black library is that great

It was more of a story builder for the Black Legion series that ADB is writing and yeah, it was a little bit dull. But I loved the way ADB portrayed Abaddon.

Absolutely loved it. As usual with ADB he gives a rational perspective of how the Chaos lives and operates and what their motivations are as opposed to the comic book style interpretation most people have that just leaves you in a state of bored disbelief.

Became a bit of a fan of the Black Legion, they are almost kinda good guys who just also happen to be utter sodding bastards who are evil. Weird duality that I like.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh but without spoiling Abaddon and the end of the book, totally unbelievable there is no reason Abaddon should all of a sudden be that uber powerful to do what he did. That was really poorly explained.

I loved it.

Again, I like a chaos setting with "normal people" (ish) and worlds that exist other than as just 'the place that the moustache-twirling villain-of-the-millenium comes from. Warbands and truces and sources of supply all matter, such that (for example) simply having a multigigatonne warship doesn't mean you can crew it.

Spoiler:
I think it was more the weapon than the wielder.

Also, remember that the person he was doing it to most definititely not the original - having neither his training, nor his experience.

I dislike first person narrative for things like this, even with that I am disappointed that instead of Abaddon himself, or even a member of the Sons of Horus we're stuck with a Thousand Sons sorcerer with 99 problems and a bitch is every one.

I liked it. I thought that the choice of someone outside of the Sons of Horus was actually effective, precisely because the book's conceit is that the Black Legion isn't supposed to be an inheritor of the Sons of Horus (although their enemies and no doubt some of their members may well make that claim).

Spoiler:
well he was certainly bitch slapping a lot of marines and abaddon is just a marine after all but then again as you say, new, unexperienced and I guess I can believe it as a sucker punch with an uber weapon

Not a fan.

The thing that made Abaddon so great was that you have some basic details about him and are free to fill in the rest. I really don't like how someone is trying to fill in the rest for me.

WAY too detailed an account. It feels like someone is trying to explain a bunch of things that are not supposed to be explained.

That's the downside to much of what the BL and GW is doing lately. Trying to explain things that were originally not supposed to be explained.

Takes a lot of the mystery and fun out of it.

Word. I fear the next thing to come from them is Dark Age of Technology wargaming, which may translate into Star Trek type stuff.

They're already getting there with all the new AdMech models being pumped out for Horus Heres games.

Think of something clever to say.

To be honest, I don't think there should be mystery or "chose your adventure" with their named characters. Leave that to your own created sergeants, captains etc.

The series is doing something important, though; the Ezekyle Abbadon we've seen in the Horus Heresy is not someone capable of putting together a new legion out of shattered bits and pieces. He's the blunt instrument's blunt instrument, who goes where Horus points and smashes things with the biggest hammer available until they stop twitching.

To go from that to the guy in the Black Legion codex supplement is a big jump.

I agree Locarno, 30k abbadon simply could not be warmaster, now the abbadabbadodon in this new book could be, and seems to be getting there.

remember guys this isn't an origin story, its a "how he became" story, don't expect abbadon to go around kicking arse all over the place, not yet anyway.

I for one cant wait to read the 1 on 1 with Sigismund.
