Just a heads up :

In the latest WD -- released 22nd November -- there is a small note stating that rules for these new models will be included in a free supplement included with WD # 46.

The one released today is # 43, so in other words, in 3 weeks time. Which I believe puts the release around or just after the release of the 3rd Hobbit film.

There is no note or mention of a rulebook or a boxset etc etc and given the short period of time between that date and Xmas itself one feels that any such release is unlikely.

Not impossible of course -- may well be something that we just haven't heard about.

One supposes -- given the recent Tyranid releases -- that the rules for them may also be on one of the GW websites... but that's entirely speculation .

Hmm, might have to grab that. The 'free' rules are one of the bonuses of the new WD format, and the fact there's a few weeks between the release and rules gives me a feeling we might see some other minis between now and then.

Seeing as all the profiles from the first book are free on BL, and it I recall were put up just as the new sourcebook came out, I think we may well get the DoS profiles up soon.

Part of me wants a mini-full Battle of the Five Armies boxed set, but part of me dreads the price of such a thing.

There may never have been a Battle of the Five Armies box set planned.

GW paid the money for what they thought was going to be a two film deal with releases over 12 months to see it become a three film 24+ month deal, plus redesigning packaging as the films sub-names changed!

I do want to see Trolls with back mounted catapults as per the trailer though. There might even be a Billy Connolly riding a ram.

I quite liked the trolls with catapults on, definitely orc style there. Plus I'm guessing it's easier to have it mounted on the back of a troll than having to push a giant timber frame up hill lol.

The word from the local GW manager is this will be a $7 supplement

According to the leaked WD pages, it's a £5.99 supplement in paper, or a free PDF from BL.

Thats what i was told. So free is good but if you are like me and dont see that $7 for 32 pages of rules isnt too bad and going to buy it regardless.

Print copy of the supplement free in WD! So if you want it, I suggest grabbing that over the next week, as it's cheaper than the later paper supplement.

Wowzer ! Smaug is a total beast, I'd love to see him and the Balrog or Sauron face it off !

Well, Smaug is certainly a beast. The songs and tales fall utterly short indeed! 20 wounds, free Will to breathe fire every turn, and knocks anything short of a Mumakil (so including Sauron and the Balrog) to the ground when charging!

Fun fact: to play the 'Smaug burns laketown' scenario as listed, you need £560ish of minis...

Also, maybe old news as I don't have the DoS book, but Thranduil is awesome in combat! S4 D6 is pretty much bog standard for heroes of his level, but getting an extra attack on for and then +1 for each additional enemy in the combat means that should you try to surround him (the traditional hero killer), heads will roll! Horn of Gondor Boromir may have a rival in the 'best at killing loads of guys' stakes!

If there was dwarf cav coming we would have seen it. Too bad

Unless there were some things still under embargo until the film is actually out, in which case we may yet see Dwarf cavalry. I know it's been very hard to get pictures of Dain (he's not in any of the art books or movie guides that I know of) so I guess he's under that too.

Unfortunately if there was more coming they would have held off on the sourcebook. IMHO, it doesn't look promising for any further releases (Dwarf cavalry, Troll-mounted catapults, etc).
