So I'm going to be starting Heavy Gear soon with a trade for some Northern and Peace River stuff.

Been reading the new Beta rules slowly. Man is this a long winded ruleset. About half way through and I want to be sure i got this right.

My first impression is that they use WAY TOO MANY ABBREVIATIONS. I'm gonna need a quick reference sheet with them all.

1) The base dice pool for any dice roll is 2D6. Then modifiers may change it.

2) There are two types of rolls. Rolls and Checks. Rolls are stand alone, Checks are both players roll dice and see who wins.

3) For a Roll, for every dice that equals or exceeds the target number you gain one success.

4) For a Check, you roll the dice. Pick the highest which equal'd or exceeded the target number. And then add one to that number for each other dice which also equaled or exceeded the target number. Both players do this, and the active player subtracts the passive player's result to determine number of successes.

So if I am active, and we both need 4+ and roll 3 dice. I roll 5,4,2. He rolls 4,4,1. My total would be 6 and his total would be 5. 6-5=1 success

I assume more successes means more damage is done with an attack(haven't gotten that far yet, they have an odd layout for where stuff is. How to do damage should be up near checks and not after force composition)

Remember even a 0=success just have to have a weapon that has a higher PEN than their ARM that is one thing I've had to remember.

Yeah, read as much.

Seems like an incredibly swingy system.

If I'm rolling 3D6 and have GUN4+, I can get a total between 4 and 8. Then minus whatever my opponent rolls. If he gets even one success it cuts down the damage caused dramaticall, and fluffing your Pilot roll can cause a ton more damage than if you even got one passing dice roll.

Now I'm trying to understand the Forward Observation/Sat Observation and Indirect fire. Seems like an important thing to be able to do.

Is the following the correct procedure to do a Sat observation Indirect bombardment

I have a unit containing a Warrior IV Chieftain who has SatUp 4+

I have a FS unit containing a pair of Crusader IVs

My opponent has a unit I wish to Indirect Fire at with the Crusader's Field Mortars.

1) I must activate the unit containing the Crusader IVs and have them use the Stand-by action(Bracing along with it)

2) My opponent activates a unit and does stuff.

3) Activate the unit with the Warrior IV Chieftain. Make sure they are in auto-comm range of the Crusaders. Select a target. Then make a SatUp roll. For each success, one of my Crusader IVs can chain any IF weapons attacking the nominated target.

The SatUp roll appears to still count as a Comms event, so I assume this means I can gain additional dice on the check using the Boost Comms roll of any other members of the Chieftain's unit.

Basically, I must activate the unit with the big guns first and put them into Stand-by before I use Forward Observation or Satellite Observation.

Yup it's very math intensive and have to choose weapons wisely when shooting enemy Gears. Blast weapons having the advantage to chip away extra points of damage.

Yes hence is nice to have a model with a SatUp in both squads so you don't have to be in Auto comms range. If you can have a Support Unit with a low EW rating in a squad say a Chatterbox Iguana in a Fire Support Cadre of Cobras you can chain IF attacks.

Ok cool.

Trading some FoW for some Peace River, North, and South forces. Really like the Peace River models.

Stuff I know is in the Peace River trade is 3 Warriors, a Warrior Chieftain, a couple Vanguard Warriors, Warrior Scourge, a couple Warrior IVs, Crusader and Demolisher Crusader. And some other stuff which I haven't heard what it is yet.

What would I be looking to add to that for a Peace River force?

There's a "metric gak ton" of North and South stuff, I assume he's got plenty of that to choose from.

I play primarily South and once the Kickstarter box arrives I'll have the other 3. So I really wouldn't know what else to get on top of them.

Question on upgrade models.

There aren't different models between simple upgrades like making a model into a cmd varient? Or something like upgrading a Crusader IV into a V(which ruleswise seems to only be a weapon swap for a one point upgrade)

Yes either a cmd variant or some have AT or AI for upgrades.

I ask because I don't see a model for a Crusader V anywhere on their website. So I assume that physically its just a Crusader IV with the appropriate weapon swaps.

I know Peace River doesn't have every model made yet so that could be one not made yet?

I assume its out because the beta rules model list don't list it as unreleased.

Looking at the Beta rules the V is an upgrade that is determined by it's loadout.
