Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
World Eaters: Simple enough Linebreaker mission, perhaps based not on objectives but on actually moving units off the enemy board edge, scoring points for each one while the defender scores for each unit that doesn't get through after a turn limit.
Word Bearers: I would suggest retrieving a relic or artifact, but The Relic remains one of my least favourite missions, so I won't. For something a little more unique, how about a mission based on corrupting some human mobs (use unmarked Cultist rules) while the loyalists try to protect them? The WB have to corrupt the mobs just as if they were objectives (so can be 'contested' by both sides having units close) and once a side controls a mob, they can move/shoot/fight with them as normal. At the end, the side with the most humans under their control wins.
Death Guard: Something like spreading a virus? Set up terrain, DG can 'infect' a terrain piece with the virus by spending a turn in contact with it, or remaining inside it, loyalists can cleanse it by hitting it with a flame or Volkite weapon, or removing all DG from within. If over half the terrain is infected, DG win, if not, Loyalists win.
Those do play to the chaotic side of the legions, though, so it depends on how far corrupted your various players have made their forces. The loyalists are a little more applicable, as they don't change so much.
Imperial Fists: something siegey... How about having destroyable/repairable buildings as objectives, and giving the IF rules for fortifying buildings while the enemy get rules for breaking them? A building gains +1 HP if garrisoned by an IF squad, loses 1 if occupied by a Traitor squad. Start some buildings intact, some damaged, some destroyed, and have the IF attempt to have X number of buildings intact/repaired at the end of the game.
Iron Hands: Again, the obvious one is something Relic based, trying to recover something of Ferrus Manus's possession. But what about having them split up and trying to reform, while the enemy try to stop them? Designate an RV area, bring the IH squads in from randomised board edges, and have them go for the RV point while the enemy try to stop them. IH win if half their force reaches the area by turn X.
Salamanders: not overly certain of what they got up to in the HH after Istvaan, but going on their 40k fluff, something based on protecting some civvies might work. Give them 50 guys with GEQ statlines, have them try to keep them alive until the end if the game, while the enemy tries to wipe them out. Might need some rules to protect the humans, like making them untargettable if there are Salamanders within 3".
Hope that gives you some ideas!

thanks para, some good ideas there, especially the death guard toxin one, works quite well, the imp fist one would be cool too.
plan is to have 1 unique legion specific mission per campaign and you have helped a great deal.
it will also make some cool matchups, protect the civies for sallies as you suggest, but against the word bearers trying to corrupt them, all the mixes and matches.

Hmmm, what about the following:
Word Bearers:
Library invasion or capture and/or book burning (bonus points for using the Ashen Circle). Perhaps they are attempting to burn down works on the Imperial Truth or something similar and have found an office of prominent dignitaries ripe for the flame.
Death Guard:
Something that plays to their strength as heavy infantry. Perhaps a mission where they need to fill a location with Power Armoured bodies heedless of the cost. Perhaps a phalanx of Death Guard marching on an ICBM complex intending to capture and subvert it. Or attempting to capture a cache of canisters of Phosgene-IIXX Gas.
World Eaters:
Demoralising raids on non-combatants, reserve forces or similar.
Imperial Fists:
Hmmm, tricky. Siege assaults are obvious, but a grinding city-fight with building clearances may also suit their style. Lots of kill-zone rapiers, Phalanx units and terminator assaults.
Iron Hands:
Shattered legion revenge perhaps - they've been decimated and are out for a glorious death. Or, you could go Red Talon-esque route and have them hunt down collaborators and traitors in order to mercilessly butcher them.
Salamanders:
Another shattered legion. Definitely less death or glory and perhaps more guerrilla fighters. Striking from hidden locations, melta-ing everything and disappearing.

The Altar of War book has a lot of great missions... some specifically for Chaos v SM, but none specifically for 30K obviously.
Both the PlanetStrike update and the City Fight update are cool.
City Fight so far is my favorite... it's basically an updated "Maelstrom of War" type mission game but with the objectives placed in buildings/ruins.

Hey... I've been listening to you guys again (love the podcast)... you inspired me to build a KanBan list, that I think might rival your own. I need an intern just for the data entry!
But I'll second that campaign episode, it's certainly worth the listen.

The Armageddon solution:
The Warmaster raged "Mortarion swore to me that his raiding fleet would succeed" he turned
on Malogurst "And now you bring me news that they have been repelled by my brothers legion"
Horus was unarmoured wearing just a pale green tabbard that did nothing to hide his stature,
his eyes blazed with fury "How?" he growled
"My lord, the report states that the Death Guard made planetfall as expected, and with little
resistance, they moved to the proto-hive of Hades, there they encountered a heavily dug in
force of Imperial Fists, they.." Maloghust paused choosing his words wisely, something that
he was having to do with alarming regularity since the primarchs return from the portal.
"Have been beaten back by the guns of the hive"
Maloghust shifted uncomfortably under Horus's gaze, few could match his gaze and Maloghurt
was not ashamed that he was not among them.
"Yet more errors from my enigmatic brother, his mind is distracted of late" Horus mused
"My lord, we also have reports of a Salamanders fleet moving into the system, the Death Guard
are requesting reinforcements"
"Reinforcement? I should leave them to die for there laxity..." horus paused seeming to consider
his next words
"No, no we cannot leave them to die, Armageddon must fall, it may not pose an immediate
threat but I cannot allow the construction of the fabrication plants to continue, the Armageddon
system would quickly become a thorn in my side" Horus moved to a massive shelf of books
looking them over and turned back to maloghurst with intent.
"Prepare a ritual, I need to speak to my brothers"
Mortarion stood in the observatory, the stars calmed him, he counted the stars and whilst
a futile endeavor it seemed to focus his mind, "that daemon" he mused
"that daemon had been right" there was more to this universe that he realized,
the warp touched all and corrupted it, it was a futile endeavor to even try to stop it, this war...
he had helped start it.
He shifted painfully, his wounds were still painful "Jaghatai, why did you forsake me,
why did you refuse the offer to fight at my side, was there something you knew I wonder?"
HIs skin began to prickle, he knew the feeling, magic.. No not magic, that was the
forte of charlatans and tricksters, this was sorcery, this was REAL.
"To whom do you speak brother" came and echoing voice
Mortarion turned, "Horus" he said, almost a whisper
"you look ill brother, paler than usual"
"I am well warmaster" said Mortarion, almost spitting the words
"My, my, so bitter brother, i had not realized the great resilience of my brother could be
bypassed so easily, the Kharns blade must have bitten deep"
It was an obvious ploy to anger him Mortarion thought, but it didn't matter, nothing mattered
none of what occurred here would last, nothing ever did, he gazed at Horus's incorporeal shade
standing in the observatory, even the mighty Horus had tainted himself with the warp, he
probably didn't even know how corrupted he had become
"Brother, why have you disturbed me in my sanctum?"
"Can a brother not just visit and talk" horus stated acting hurt
"No, Horus, not you, you always want something, even before we betrayed our father"
"He betrayed US" horus raged, his thin veneer of calm slipping for a moment before he wrestled
It under control, he turned away moving around the observatory, a book caught his eye.
"the book of lorgar?"
"yes" rasped mortarion
"an interesting work, the incantations within make this possible" horus stated, looking around and
raising his arms slightly to make a point, Horus picked up the book
seemingly feigning interest in it, he opened it and scanned the contents, not looking at
mortarion he began to speak
"You are of course correct brother, i have a task for you, the raiding force you sent to Armageddon"
"The force commanded by durak of the 82nd, i know it" stated mortarion moving up to his
brothers side"
Horus dropped the book upon the table and turned to mortarion
"they failed mortarion" horus let the words hang in the air, the inherent threat in them
plain to see
"Impossible" spat Mortarion, he moved to pick up the book of Lorgar and placed it upon the
shelf, he turned looking at Horus over his shoulder
"I sent a thousand of my Death guard, mortals could not prevail against that"
"They did not, Dorns progeny were there, Durak was ambushed whilst entering the city"
"Ah, the sons of Dorn, they do love to build there pointless little castles, it matters not, all
eventually breaks down, turns to dust" mortarion looked down avoiding Horus's gaze
"Still" said horus with a slow growl
"The planet needs to be dealt with Mortarion, and i want you to go personally"
Mortarion looked up into Horus's eyes again, seemingly gaining confidence from this new task
"Why?"
"Vulkan"
"Vulkan is there? I thought the Animal had him?"
"The.. Animal as you say, lost him, Curze has always been Mecurial at best, how Vulkan escaped
I know not, but he is reunited with his sons and makes best speed to Armageddon, he cannot be
allowed to link with the Imperial Fists and fortify the planet" Horus moved over to the centre
of the room looking up into the stars, seemingly searching for his own amist the millions of
others.
"Curze claimed to have killed him over and over, his mind has slipped even further, its
accelerating"
Of course it is you fool, mortarion thought, all your minds are slipping, the taint infects
you all, only I am free of it, but he only said.
"Of course, he was ever touched my madness" with a wry smile "Fool" he thought
Horus sighed "you have your task brother, I have redirected forces from the World eaters
And Word bearers to the region, they return from the crusade against Guillimans realm, they are
Under strength so use them wisely"
"I am not fool Horus, how do you think I managed without the great Horus Lupercal directing
my every move"
"Indeed" stated horus with a wry smile, he turned his back on mortarion, as he did so he seemed
to shimmer as if out of phase with the space he occupied, then he was gone
mortarion stood alone for a few moments, gathering his thoughts... "What is the point brother,
it will all come to enough, it will all fall, it will all.... Decay"
"And they shall decend upon fire, with wings of steel and hearts
of iron, they shall smite the Xenos, Purge the unclean and guard the
souls of Humanity, but above all,
THEY SHALL NO KNOW FEAR!"
The Emperor of Mankind at the start of the great crusade.
That's basically the pretense of the campaign so far, I will be expanding upon it in my campaign thread, this ones is for general ideas etc.
thanks in advance guys and as always, comments welcome

Glad you enjoyed it! I hope it has helped out a bit. Although it is new to you - we have been around nearly 5 years now.

Thanks for listening!
I wish there was a way to export a Kanban board to take a look and compare - all I can do is screenshot. Since I added a huge amount of CSM for my Black Legion list (thanks to The Talon of Horus and Imperial Armour 13: War Machines of The Lost and The Damned) my Kanban board has grown. Although completing so much of my 30k Word Bearers army has helped thin it out a bit!
