So, I got a space wolf army, Thats been unpainted for so long because I find the space wolf color scheme to be boring... But I'm also dumb and cant think of any colorscheme myself, So I wanted to ask here for sugestions from others on a alternative color scheme for space wolves! What colors do you use for your space wolves?

I use a dark grey for the armour, and muted reds and yellows for the squad markings, and bronze/silver/gold trim depending on rank. It gives a much grittier and grimdark look than the GW sky-blue that, unless done very well, I usually detest. Somehow it looks fine in artwork, but worse on actual minis.

I think a grey would look good as space wolves. Not like the bluey grey like normal, but a darker grey. For the company markings on the shoulder pads I would keep them the same with the yellows and reds.

My Wolf Priest is a dark grey and I like the look, but I'm not gonna strip my entire army for that. I didn't like the bright blue that GW has them. I went with a soldier blue and I am happy. Personally I think Space Wolves armour should be dark.

If you want to go with colors that differ from the current SW ones but are still official, you could go with the 13th company darker grey and black paint scheme.

Some fluff background could help with deciding on a colour scheme. Does your army represent SW, or some sort of SW successor chapter, or an unrelated marine chapter who happen to count-as SW for rules purposes?

The suggestion above about dark grey gave me an idea of something that sounds like it would be amazing (and makes me mad I sold my stormclaw set)

Well, I havent realy thought about fluff much with my space wolves.. I'v read forums and seen other people get shot down because they sugested their army being a Space Wolf successor and stuff (With everyone shouting "SpaceWolves dont have successors!!" and stuff..) And that has made me a bit disheartend, Feeling that I cant realy do anything unique or diferent with my wolves..

I do have one colorscheme I have thrown together but everyone thinks it is more fitting a Flesh Tearers successor..


Dark grey can look nice, But I dont know what paints to use for a good dark grey colorscheme.. I tend to use the GW paints.

At the end of the day it's your army, you can make up what ever fluff you want

My friend did some Space Wolves which had codex grey (is that dawnstone now) as the main armour colour. Start with the dark GW base coat, then layer it up with dawnstone and whatever the next shade up is called now.

They grey looks so much better than the blue. The ice axes etc certainly stand out a lot more due to higher contrast

Swap the green for red and that's pretty much what I use, so call me biased but I say it's cool!

I like it, but I would get rid of the green. I'm with Paradigm -- swap it for the red.

Also, if you want to go Naggaroth Night (which is quite dark), I would go with a bright red, like mephiston or evil sunz scarlet, to create more contrast. Otherwise, the model turns out being a very dark model.

Alternatively, use very bright edge highlights.

The original studio Ragnar Blackmane had almost white armour (back in 2nd ed) and he looked awesome. I'm sorry I'm not able to find a picture of him. I think that would be a good route though if you wanted to keep close to original scheme.

If you just want to go completely custom, I would go with a nice green and do a sort of Celtic theme.

I would say don't swap the green weapons for red swap for yellow.

Green Space Wolves would be kind of cool.. What green color do you think would look good? A darker or a brighter green? Currently I own Moot Green, Straken Green and Caliban Green. I do like the Straken Green.. What colors would look good with the green to break it up a bit? (Like shoulderpads and kneepads and stuff)

I'd go for a snow white color scheme. That is their whole deal right? Snow and ice.

White is such a pain to paint.. XD

Yeah Straken green is really nice, I like that it's kind of muted. I think golds and bronze go nicely with green. Light colours such as cream, bone and yellows work really well too. These kind of schemes used to be popular during RT.



Purple is the right frequency to go with green, but you might have trouble getting a good contrast. I would suggest a very dark almost grey purple to make it work. You can see (or perhaps imagine) this guy's cape lining and holsters with purple tint. Though leather colours will aslo work with green.

I use chaos black for the main color of armor, with P3 Frostbite as a secondary color for legs, helmets, shoulders and sometimes feet (not all at once, we are an individual group so each model is a little different than the rest while fitting the general color scheme). I also do different detail bits by squad or pack. Golds, greys, reds etc

Means, you got to add, a lot of grey to smooth out the brightness of the blue paintjob.

I have gone with a darker Blue/Grey with mine...

I dint like the Blue Space Wolve I saw either. I went with a darker stormy sky color.

Give them fur patterns like on real wolves. Just lots of scratchy sorta browns whites and greys to look like pseudo fur painted onto armor.
