Hi, a forum lurker here who has decided to finally join. I havn't been seriously into any miniature gaming for about 15 years but I'm planning on getting back into it very soon. Had a few minis over the last 5 years or so just as i wanted to paint something. Any way I am hoping to document my return and hopefully get lots of good feedback (I looked at many forums and Dakka looked like the best/friendliest place for this)

Hopefully I will have something worth contributing before too long.

Welcome to Dakka

Welcome mate, this is a great place to post pictures. People are helpful, friendly and constructive. What more can you ask for?
Enjoy!

Cheers guys, I do have a few questions actually. While I am most likely going to go down the 40k route as most of my hobby time will be converting and painting, and I prefer the sci-fi stuff. I get the impression that WHFB is a better game in terms of balance and current rule sets is this so?

Secondly, whilst I am still umming and ahhing about which gw game to settle on, I am look Dark Vengeance and planning on converting all the DA into Emperors Children CSM just post heresy, have any of you come across this being done before?

Finally have the Hellbrutes replaced CSM Dreadnoughts or do they have both now? I can ask this in my 'local' store but thats a bit of a drive atm.

Cheers again

If balance and rules are your aim, neither WHFB or 40k are particularly well balanced (compared to other miniatures games) - but a lot of the "broken" combos can easily be avoided by only playing like-minded people, who share your idea of fun. If Sci-Fi is your preferred area, stick with it (you can always diversify later).

Yes, it is just a name change really though - you can still use old dreadnought models (including Forgeworld alternatives) using the Helbrute rules with no problems.

I used to play 40k exclusively, then started playing Warhammer fantasy at the start of 8th to try it out. Nowadays I play WHFB exclusively. I enjoy the more tactical movement part of the game, and magic is much more of a you vs. your opponent phase, than the psychic phase in 40k.

I'd say it comes down to personal preference, with a lot of weight going to whatever is strong is your local community. I like Fantasy much more now, but that isn't to say 40k still isn't a decent game.

Hey! welcome to Dakka Dakka! I'd like to think we're friendly here, we complain a bunch but friendly is us.

Balance? Well I would just say balance out your choice of army per the rule set after you pick which one is more suited to you. folks will argue all day long about balance etc, I would just go with the game that makes you happy, having a community where you live is important too, if they are strong into 40K and you like science fiction over the fantasy then you're in luck! You'll gain experience in the group too, who pushes his armies to the limits of crazy and then those who are more balanced with theirs.

Anyway, go with what makes you happy IMO, again, Welcome!

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of the women.

Thanks everyone, and thanks for the advice will stick with 40k for now. I probably wont have much time for playing the game anyway so should go with what I want to paint/sculpt the most.

OOOh Infinity also looks temptingly shiny though.
