I was thinking of picking up some of this series. Is it an ongoing series, or is each book its own story and can be read in pretty much whatever order you want?

If it's in any order, which books do you guys recommend?

It doesn't follow any timeline.. A couple of ones I liked were Helsreach, Architect of Fate and Death of Integrity.

They are in any order, as each represents a different famous event in 40k's long history. I recommend Helsreach and Death of Integrity as well, but will add Legion of the Damned and Battle of the Fang as well.

That said, if you're going to pick up Helsreach, you're better off picking up the Armageddon hardback, as it includes the follow-up novella to Helsreach, Blood and Fire, which is quite good.

Rynn's World was excellent as well but Helsreach is a great book.

Helsreach is probably the very best of this series, however they are not linked at all really as they are all based on seperate battles in different sectors/times etc but they all share that common 'significant battle/campaign for SM' vibe.

I'm a huge Horus Heresy fan, and saw that Battle of the Fang seemed to be a (1000 years later) sequel to a couple of HH books, so I wanted to grab that one. I just wasn't sure if it was set up as a flashback in an ongoing series, or if the SMB were stand-alone tales.

Now I know.

i really enjoyed Battle of the Fang, as it details not only my favorite Marine Chapter, but also a battle that had only been a blurb for many years...

for sheer reading pleasure, great writing, and the coolest human character in any BL novel (in my opinion), Helsreach is my favorite...

i think Rynn's World is my #3 choice in the series...

one that hasn't been mentioned, but which i liked a lot for it's insight into the cold character of the Iron Hands Chapter, is Wrath of Iron...
Chris Wraight is definitely an unsung talent, and has been churning out good stuff for quite a few years now...
this novel deserves a lot more praise than it gets...

Recommend you skip Legion of the Damned. Worst written book I have ever read (and I've read some crap in my day...). When the dialogue is loaded with more exposition than the surrounding text, even though the characters taking part in the conversation each knows what the information they are sharing - if this were a play, I could excuse it, but in a novel? Ugh... I put it back on the shelf after the first 100 pages - it was that unreadable.
