BA player I'm not overly impressed. I only got the codex yesterday but it seems full of fluff. I'd have to agree they're more vanilla than ever.
Big killer for me is Assault squads now being
FA choices. Sanguinory priests now not 1-3 per slot. I used to have 2x assualt squads of 10 marines with a priest in each. That used to scare the jebbus out of my opponent. I can sort of do it but will struggle in a 1k army.
Final kicker is Sanguinary priests can't be in terminator armour. I'd planned all along to have a kick ass termy squad with a priest in it to give it a real kick. Can't do that now (legally) anyway. I'll probably do the model anyway.
I suppose the up side is the points drop, but I'm not convinced!!!
Red Vanilla Marines me thinks!!!
Well, except for the terminator
SP you can make pretty much every
BA build that has ever existed with Unbound; which I realize is highly stigmatized on the internet, but in my experience it's been entirely without the doom and gloom predicted. That said I am surprised to hear that anyone was scared of your 2 assault squads with priests haha; I also ran those for years; they're ok, and they're still in the book (just
FA). I also ran a 5 man Sanguinary Guard (with Priest) for years and they were good if used right, if not way too expensive - they're better now.
I'll probably keep one RAS in my list; but the cheaper
DC are just too hard to resist now, as well as the cheaper
SG that I've loved since they came along. Having played ZERO games at this point, my only real CONS would be the crowed
HQ and Elite areas but soon I'll have some better experience to draw on; I was also used to running several
SP's so that will be a big change, but the army wide
Init buffs and Furious Charge really make that not such a big deal. I think we still have lots of flavor, as ALL of the same units are still there; a move from Troops to
FA won't that change.
