Matt here is talking about Malifaux. And, from a competitive 40k player background and perspective, yeah. It's that good.

Mike, I know you just sent the survey out, but any idea when we can expect to hear about Fantasy/AoS events at NOVA? I know it does not seem to be the internet's cup of tea, but I definitely think there is potential there and am really curious to see what gets whipped up!

Thanks

You didn't say they had to be 40k baby seals.

Any idea when a FAQ will be out? A few small tweaks to my list will be based on how you rule some things.

OH, and I've gotten some feedback regarding the Malifaux North American Championships, and I'd like to clear up some confusion.

THE MALIFAUX CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE **NOT** AN INVITATIONAL. ALL PEOPLE CAN REGISTER.

THE MALIFAUX CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE **NOT** AN INVITATIONAL. ALL PEOPLE CAN REGISTER.

THE MALIFAUX CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE **NOT** AN INVITATIONAL. ALL PEOPLE CAN REGISTER.

Personally, I understand the confusion, as certain events were referred to as "qualifying events." They were events that gained the winner free admission into the tournament, which is great. But that label, "qualifying," confused a lot of people, and rightly so. I think "Event that Gives the Winner Free Admission To Another Really Great Event" Event is more accurate, but ultimately much more cumbersome. But the longer name appeals to the German side of me (Germans, of course, being more known for their precision than their poetics). Still, the name "Qualifier Event" is what we went with, despite its inaccuracy.

But still, if you want to paticipate in the first ever Malifaux North American Championships, now is the time to register here: www.novaopen.com

I didn't see any restrictions on duplicate detachments in the final primer, is that still a rule?

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

There is no restriction on multiple detachments.

Update - several of our seminars are VERY close to selling out, especially Roman and Raffa's.

Please do not wait until NOVA if you have classes you want to take from folks - we cannot make more room.

NOVA participants!!!

Don't forget to register for TRIOS if you plan on attending with your team. This a truly fun event with a unique format. This is our 5th year of doing it and it has always proven to be a great time had by all. The day is filled with laughs and battle shouts and maybe some alcohol here and there MUHAHAHA. "Beer cart anyone!"

We have a solid turn out so far but have room for many more teams. Our relaxed schedule on Thursday makes for an awesome day of debauchery and 40K.

This tournament not only focuses on winning and losing but also gives a chance for the more crafty to have some fun and let loose with magnificent team displays. Dont miss out on the spectacle that is the TRIOS!

All are welcome!

Does a fire point count as always provide LOS or ONLY when making shooting attacks.
Buildings usually count as scoring units. Do they lose this at nova?
Are we to infer that void shields, bunkers, etc are now allowed at nova?

There are also references to old rules that no longer exist in their past format(like entropic strike).
Inquisitor Rex and Soloman Lok have recently been updated in the rules.

Last question is how do you want to handle the Marine 25mm/32mm issue. All new PA marines have been on 32s but some kits have no been updated. Is there any modeling rule here or would you prefer consistency across a force? Thank you.

Decided not to address the Dark Angel Ravenwing Detachment issue with 3 slots but only one model that has the special rule? Some people would like a Chaplain or Libby on a bike to be leading the detachment

Highlander questions:
Why no love for battle brothers??? This feels unnecessarily restrictive in terms of making a unified force, rather than just having little detachment splotches on the battlefield.

And similarly, is there no limit to detachments/sources (assuming you stick with the 0-1 unit restrictions)? That would be great, but I saw nothing explicitly confirming it so I want to be sure.

I really hope we see some flavor at this event. With the mission selection I fear we are going to see the Marine Gladius spammed for all the obsec scoring with progressive objectives and free obsec vehicles/pods. I am actually less worried about the wind rider spam. I have not had a chance to look at the latest rules pack but are Gargantuan Creatures or Super Heaviy Walkers still illegal?

No garg/supers.

Also the gladius will have trouble because it has next to no killing power when maxed out. Also will have a hard time with the secondaries as well since many of them are killing related.

Dont get me wrong the strike force will do well but it wont be the I win button.

It is as leth says. GSF is good, but not even close to an iwin button.

Battle Companies will also frequently be starting in the hole considering they have no chance of preventing anyone from getting the Tertiary bonus points, and against anything other than another MSU army, will often have a hard time getting them themselves.

The core missions definitely feel as though they could favor Battle Companies pretty heavily, but it's less of a problem when you take the full scope of the missions into account. I mean, it also makes Secondary selection practically an afterthought. Kill Points, Moment of Bloodshed, and First Blood will give you a practically guaranteed triple Secondary against them. You can obviously slot in Linebreaker if you somehow don't think you'll get First Blood or Moment of Bloodshed.

Notes to all - F.A.T. Mats, produced by Frontline Gaming and Tablewar, are still available for pre-order to be picked up at no shipping charge from the NOVA Open.

Save yourself a nice little shipping cost and pick up some radical mats made by two of the better companies out there while you're at it.

Mats can be pre-purchased at novaopenstore.com

Please note - you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PURCHASE THEM AT NOVA. We pre-order the quantity that are pre-ordered by our customers, and do not have the cashflow to order any meaningful quantity of extras. Last year, several players waited until NOVA to ask about buying them, only to be turned away. Don't wait!

Based upon playtesting and local events, you're going to see a lot less of the GSF wild success than you might otherwise expect. It will be common and popular - it excels at all things, including ITC and ETC type missions and formats. In NOVA, it does and has shown to bleed secondary and tertiary points in a big hurry, while struggling to accomplish many of them against numerous lists. It can be very good at scoring 9 points on Primary against some opponents, but can equivalently struggle to stop opponents getting 9 of their own by game end (esp if games goes 6+).

A lot of feedback shows we'll probably see a lot of variety, but it is of course going to be of the "Top tier" kind ... Decurion, Gladius, double skyhammer, Flyrant spam (tons of that at a recent prep tournament), daemons, thunderstars, Eldar, etc. will all be present in plenty of #s.

Also, I do find it very surprising to see how people view things. A year ago, most people would have cried for joy to see a bunch of plain jane marines and transports all over the board instead of 2+ re-roll star spam and FMC summoning armies and 5-knight lists.

The additional advantage here is that unlike most mission formats, you can and should tailor your mission selection to the opponent. In general, this does not stop good armies from doing well, but it enables a far wider array of armies to score a bunch of points themselves, which in practice has led to things where we see oddball or even "noncompetitive" lists either do very well from a Battlemaster perspective or even pull out wins against things like Gladius and Decurion, where they choose the right missions and are well able to get 17-19 points themselves while playing well to shut down these armies' ability to score Tertiary (kill a unit or more a turn) and one or two Secondaries.

Yeah no, I am pumped for this event. The ATC was great fun and tons of variety. These missions also lend toward a variety of different builds.

Honestly seeing actual marines on the table will make me very happy, even if I lose to them. Its been what three editions?

Honestly I don't envy any tourney planners this year with all the quick release and meta shift. ATC was interesting and a lot of fun and I expect the NOVA to be the same. I am encouraged with what you are seeing mike and I hope it holds true. Just remember my baby seals hehehe.

That's 50% of the reason I'm in Malifaux. Keeping up with the Meta/Balance Adjustments is a slog.
