So I just got my Blood Angels Codex and a Deathstorm box. I'm new to 7th Edition and here's my quesetion: Can I take unique units like Karleen, Cassor, or Rapheon's DC and use them to fill out slots for other formations. For example the Blood Angels Codex comes with the Baal Strike Force. I'd much rather just create a generic force and get the Initiative bonus (old furious charge yaye!) Can I use Karleen as my HQ, Cassor and DC as my Troops and Terminators as my Elites and get the initiative bonus from the Baal Strikeforce? (In lieu of using the Deathstorm detachment rules?)

You need to use the specified units and specific number of units you cannot break the formation apart to make another formation.

So in other words what you are saying is that I can only use Captain Karleen in the deathstorm detachment. I can't break him off and just use him as an HQ in a CAD?

(just clarifying)

for a battle forged army.

your army is made up of detachments.

formations are special kind of detachment.

the units in deathstorm are actually not detachments or formations, as they lack the formation/detachment icon in the upper left of the datasheet.

as such they are 'dataslates' like cypher and bel'akor etc.

and can be used in other detachments/formations when specified and not restricted by those formations/detachments rules.

the exception for deathstorm are blood angels strike force deathstorm and the tyranid one with the same icon in the top left, which are formations.

the interesting thing about the above is in deathstorm there are a squad of death company which are troops, and a dred which are troops, instead of the elites slot they normally are.

as they are unique they can only appear once in your army and have to be taken as listed in the dataslate.

in otherwords you can take a CAD with the HQ from deathstorm, and the dread/dc as the troops from deathstorm but they have to be taken as listed on the datasheet with no changes.

Nicest part about Deathstorm for BA from what I can tell.
