Been away from WH40K for just over 10 years but not that I've finally found a shop out here (South Korea) that actually stocks GW stuff - am finally getting back into it. Looking to start building a new army; starting with a 1000pter for some friendly games and then building on that. Can't really decide on who to go with though. Definitely NOT BAs, 'Nids or Necrons (really really don't like 'em; the latter two being as dull as dishwater to paint). What would you rec/mnd? Liking the look of Grey Knights (both in terms of playing and painting) but not totally sold yet.....

I'll suggest Eldar. They have some of the best looking models IMO and you can paint their armor any color you want. They are also very strong on the table (to the point of annoying a lot of people on this site).

yeah I know!! I see a little bit more paint versatility with GK, but you're right, their not the most exciting of paint subjects Automatically Appended Next Post: lustigjh wrote:I'll suggest Eldar. Aye - loooooong time agao I use to paint/field Eldar. Really like 'em. They weren't so strong back then; seem to have had a major overhaul since I last played 'em Automatically Appended Next Post:
Aye - an IG army is definitely on the books at some point

My vote is for building your own chapter of vanilla marines, at least at first-versatile on the tabletop, will let you get back in and learn the new rules as well as having some fun with painting.

Dark Angels are fun, I like the variety of army they can field(termies, tactical marines, Bikes) as either mixed or pure armies.
Orks are always fun, they have crazy rules, I don't play them but no game I have played against them wasn't fun.

It kind of depends on whether you're looking for a combination of painting and winning, or you want something that can reliably win games. If it's the latter I'd go for Tau or Eldar.
ORKs frankly are a pain in the ass, too many damn models and fiddly as all hell to paint!
I'd actually second the vanilla marines comment above. Paint them in your own chapter colours, and voila, they can be 'counts-as' for any of the space marine codices, and allies in you get bored, but pick up another imperial faction.

In defense of Grey Knights to paint, they do have a lot more detailing work than Necrons, with random scrolls and books hanging off of them. Only lazy people like me paint them the same as Crons

Yes, all the Space Marine factions take much longer to paint to a display quality than other factions. They not only have a lot of do-dads like scrolls and seals, but they have many detail bits with a crazy number of colors, when compared to other factions. Even standard bolters have much more detail to pick out on them (if you wish) than, say, a splinter or shuriken rifle. Plus, SM types all have the blank spaces to write on, not to mention freehand areas... that's an hour a model just to do the writing bits, if you want to really do a bang-up job.

Yeah - I've got a nice wee idea for a paint scheme for them that departs a touch from the usual total silver fest. Do really like all the detail that comes with them

I play DA. Painting realistic robes is potentially one of the hardest bits of highlighting I've done. Sure, just darken the recesses highlight the peaks, but getting a seamless flow of color vs the easier, sharper highlights on the armor itself. Then throw in the million purity seals, all the dark angels medallions and doodads, the fact that all the bolters have some form of emblem on them.... I won't lie, a command or veteran squad is crazy fun to paint. When you don't want to strangle yourself. Marines have the potential of being really hard to paint, if you go detail heavy and want to make them all look unique.
Outside of that, they're decent fun to play, and there's a lot you can do with them (standard DA, ravenwing, deathwing).

mostly painting with some wins thrown in. Orks are great - funny, mad, and too many bloody models. I've never played them. Eldar I used to play and totally like

Robes......c8. Getting them smooth and right is a bstd. I've just started painting the DAs from the boxed set now. Great chapter to paint. Loving it. You're right though; so many wee bitsnbobs and extra details to focus on. Def worthwhilethough

Just remember that all Imperium are now great mates, and work as allies nearly as if they were the same army.
So, getting 1000 points of a few armies is a good idea.
You can then expand the one you like best, and can take your time over it.

Find what army most appeals to you. Eldar are competitive, SM are really good and flexible, and CSM gets whacky stuff especially with Daemons.

Yeah, but can't you basically just basecoat Necrons in one of the metals, wash in Nuln Oil, and call it good? Can't exactly do the same thing with GKs (though it is close!).

Well, yeah, but they got the beam part to paint green (or blue).
*Sigh*
The lazy part of me really wants to start a Necron army now, just so I can basecoat, wash, base em and be done. Laziness be damned!

Is interesting to paint the only criterion, or are there other things you're looking for in an army as well?
If it's just painting, I'd say either stripe of eldar, orks, or guard. If you want power armor, then I'd probably say CSM over anyone else.

Hoping to get the whole army painted up in the next few months so I can start warring with them. Thx for all the advice folks
