Hello I have played 2 games both as Orcs and it was fun but I have not committed to them yet. I am looking for perfered melee army and I like infantry which I know 7th Edition came out and has made it about the vehicles and shooty armies. Any suggestions that can kind of keep up semi competativly. If not I was looking at necrons or Dark eldar

space wolves, they have lots of nice features in their army codex and supplement that let them get into close combat and to help them when they get there, the army has decent vehicles (you can even take a dreadnaught as an HQ). finally we get to the fact that their space marines, their easy to buy used models for and to play. the downside really is that their magic is underwhelming and they have a pretty lousy fast attack slot roster. beyond thunderwolf cav nothing jumps out as amazing.

Are the space wolves better then the Blood Angels or Tyranids or Orcs?

They're wolves riding wolves wielding wolf claws. Blood angels are the closest out of 3 with blood blood.

In all seriousness, all of the above armies can be great in cc. But it mostly depends on the level of competitiveness. So far, i'd not really call tyranids a mellee army. The most 'sucksessful' tourney tyranids rely on flying tyrant spam with just one truly mellee-oriented model - the FW garganaught creature and probably a squad of carnifexes - but they're doing the most part of their damage with shooting too.

From what I have seen online Space Wolves and Tyranids are the most competitive close combat armies, but then I have never seen either one on the table top at my club, so I'm not sure how much that opinion weighs.

Nids are interesting, they just got drop pods. So now they have things that can burrow up from underground, deep strike in by drop pod, fly in, or run up the table under the cover of venomtrhopes or whatever that thing is that has a 12" shrouded bubble.

Space Wolves are all about drop pods and space row boats delivering their dudes. Really cool looking models and rules, really, really stupid fluff. Worst fluff in all of 40K imo.

Blood Angels Dex just came out, I'm not too clear on the details but from all the complaining I hear, I guess they're even worse than before, which was pretty bad.

EDIT: I mean, the most important thing is which army tickles you the most. If you're playing win at all costs that is really just a sign of incredibly small and ineffective genitalia.

Orks are doing the majority of their business in mellee. Most of our builds can't go without at least half the army being choppy or equally shooty and choppy like shootaboyz or walkers.
Greentide, speed freaks, regular footslogging, walker wall...

I'd just go for the faction which fluff you like the most. Another choppy armies worth considering are CSM and Chaos Daemons. I've seen csm with huge blobs of 20 power armored guyz with infiltrate, spawns, maulerfiends and raptors/bikes backed up by obliterators and some scarce ranged support doing really good.

The Blood Angels have some of the most reliable ways to get into Close Combat. They are the only army that I know of that can Assault when they come on to the table /with specific Formations and requirements/. The issue is that one of those requirements is a MANDATORY 1020pts and I've easily gone into 1270pt range on some mock up lists. Not to mention actual cost of the models. The Angel's Fury Formation is a '1-click deal' on GW's site that just gathers the models with no money saved but that is the Formation I'm referring to. Very expensive and no middle ground. It is either all or you don't get the bonus.

Tyranid builds right now are more focused on massive amounts of S6 shooting and forcing the enemy to roll 6s to hit the Flying Monstrous Creatures. However, if you're only looking to win at your gaming store instead of a proper tournament, there are melee types that can be very fun and very helpful to your army. Just have balance the competitive with the fun. I've finally found my happy middle with some melee units I really enjoy coupled with the best Tyranids have to offer. I win some and lose some and I'm okay with that.

The problem with both of these armies is that to really make them shine you have to buy books other than the codex. Dataslates, White Dwarf issues, Campaign Supplements. Otherwise, they really aren't that good. They can be forced to work, but the bonuses make them competitive (atleast in the Tyranid's case).

But, Orks are all about the Melee. The fighting starts and stops when they can swing their Slugga. Or Choppa. Whatever. I wouldn't count on them being competitive until the edition changes to 8th and we see what Assault looks like then. The only thing going for them is that they can put the bodies on the table and take 40 losses on the chin with a big gak-eating grin.

It's funny that the current uber-escalated meta really helps out hordes in tournaments. Greentide's doing great at GT. The only real downside is the actual ammount of models and time it's taking to move everything. So, the enemy can choose to go WAC and win on a time-shield.

If you want Orks to do well in melee go with big mobs of slugga boyz, and small 3 model mega armored nobz in trukks mobz. Dredds and Kanz look cool, but will struggle to earn their points back.

But seriously, there are some fun melee troops in the two Chaos Armies. You also get to be the #1 enemy of the lame imperium and their filthy corpse god

Weird, no one mentioned the Black Templars, they're more CC oriented than the space wolves from what I've gathered, I'm super new as well, but I wanted the exact opposite and was looking for a more shooty army. ~Imperial Fists~ Or as others have stated, the Tyranids are pretty brutal.

The best melee guys are Orcs, Space wolves, and Tyranids mainly. No army is really better then the other (except for sisters, ha.) So just pick whatever one looks coolest to you!

3500 Imperium army

1250 Nidzilla

1000 Chaos army

1000 Drukhari Raiding Force

My issue is it is a big and expensive dexision. The orcs are cool but it seems half of everyone that plays in my area have there main army as orcs and i am not a fan of following I would ratherplay an army no one plays then have 4+ people over my shoulder like why would you do that when you can do this better. I thou th t of playing sisters but 2 people play them lol. Not many necron or Dark eldar armys are eithor of them CC?

This! Kharn just got a new formation for Christmas as well. Looks to be pretty choppy.
